Gabriel Benitez v. Clay Collard
Benitez is coming off a technical submission win in his UFC Debut against Humberto Brown. He was certainly won the first round and probably the 2nd, then quickly finished the fight at the start of the 3rd round. He caught Humberto with a knee to start the round and locked up a standing guillotine and took Humberto down to the mat, seemingly already unconscious. He is 17-4 in his pro career with an 88.24% finish rate. This kid is vicious. This kid is a finisher.
Clay Collard lost his UFC Debut while getting completely destroyed by Max Holloway. He followed up his debut loss with a Decision win in his last fight against Alex White. Collard was a junior olympic boxing champ. He’s 14-5 on his career. He has won 4 of his last 5 pro fights, but has no finishes in that time.
I’m not impressed with Collard, simply because he hasn’t been able to finish fights as he’s moved up in competition. There’s no same in losing to Max Holloway, in a UFC debut no less, but I’m just not sold that this kid really wants it. Benitez clearly does. He didn’t show any signs of jitters in his UFC Debut with a dominant victory. Benitez will also be the crowd favorite in his native Mexico taking on the American.
My Pick: Gabriel Benitez (inside the distance)
Cathal Pendred v. Agusto Montano
The Irishman is on a 10 fight wining streak, with his last 3 fights being in the UFC. He’s been averaging nearly 3 takedowns per fight and has largely been successful with that style. He put Mike King to sleep with a Rear naked choke in his UFC debut, but has went to decisions in his last 2 wins. He has only finished 43.75% of his pro wins.
Agusto Montano is a violent fighter. His UFC debut was a brutal domination of Chris Heatherly which he won via R1 TKO. This type of performance was nothing new though, he’s finished 100% of his 15 professional wins with 10 by KO/TKO and 5 Submissions. He’s a purple belt in BJJ.
I like betting on finishers and Montano is a finisher. I’m sure Pendred will desparately try to take this fight to the cage & to the ground, but it’s not going to work. Pendred is a blue belt in BJJ and Montano’s purple belt will be more than good enough to win on the ground, should the fight go there. I don’t think it will though- the only thing hitting the ground in this fight is Pendred’s lifeless body.
My Pick: Agusto Montano (KO)
Francisco Trevino v. Johnny Case
Francisco is an undefeated fighter at 12-0, coming off a win in his UFC debut. He won a decision over Renee Forte more than a year ago on the Hnedricks vs. Lawler 1 card. Early in the first round he was easily taken down by Forte and immediately gave up his back, but was able to defend the rear naked choke and get back to his feet. He ended up winning the decision but wasn’t at all exciting to watch.
Johnny Case is the star of this fight. He’s on a 10 win streak with a 20-4 record, with his last 2 fights being in the UFC and he finished both. He put Kazuki Tokudome to sleep with a guillotine and TKO’d Frankie Perez. This kid is one of the brightest young fighters at 155 and I could see him moving up at a Conor Mcgregor like pace. He has an incredible 90% finish rate in his pro career and 100% finish rate so far in the UFC.
This fight is one of the locks of the night. Trevino doesn’t have a chance.
My Pick: Johnny Case (KO)
