If Trevor Hoffman does not go into the HOF on his first eligible ballot, can you then put Mariano Rivera in on the first ballot, which is what you can bet your bottom dollar they will do?

Has there ever been a closer who's strike out pitch was a change up?! I hope he gets in on his first ballot.
Guess it would only be fair to leave out Rivera untill Hoffman is in. Both deserve it no question, but is there seniority when it comes to such things?

Both deserve it, but I don't care if Hoffman does not get in on the first ballot. Why? In 2006, I was 9 years old dying for the NL to win an all-star game (they had not won in 9 years or something similar to that) and in the 9th inning the NL brings in Trevor Hoffman while winning 2-1 and he blows it giving up 2 runs making me cry and Mariano ended up closing it out lol.

Well, since the deadline for release is almost here I guess it is time for my contribution. I think it would be ridiculous if Hoffman were not elected in his first year of eligibility and Rivera went in on a skateboard, with all the accolades that can possibly be thrown at him. A career conversion rate of 88.8% versus 89.1 is so close as to be insignificant, and if I had the time to do the research I would probably find that Hoffman had more 1 run saves than Rivera, which is far higher pressure than 2 and (ugh) 3 run "saves". As for one bad all star game or "post season" records, that too is ludicrous. With the Marlins, Brewers and Padres obviously Hoffman had far fewer chances at the post season. Griffey is the only shoo-in candidate and I can see that, but the rest we will just have to wait and see. Good luck Trevor.

I've been thinking about this topic for several weeks and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a fan of putting relief pitchers in the Hall of Fame. I have a hard time voting in pitchers like Hoffman(1100 IP) and Wagner(900 IP). I also don't think Mariano Rivera(1400 IP) should be as automatic as people think he should be. To me, pitchers on the ballot such as Schilling and Mussina are much more worthy since they've thrown over 3 times as many innings (3,000-3,500 IP) as the average reliever.
If you think Hoffman deserves the HOF, then you would also have to consider Nathan, Papelbon and Francisco Rodriquez. Not too mention all of the younger relievers that eventually will compile more stats. Lee Smith is still on the ballot. Point is, there are too many relievers who will fit this criteria of specialized reliever.
But to answer your original question, Rivera will absolutely get in on his first ballot. Looks like Hoffman will get in on his 2nd. But really, I don't think it matters what ballot you get in on.

Whereas Hoffman pitched on the west coast in San Diego where no one cares because San Diego and any town with the ocean close and a beach suck as sports towns
So key in short thank the impotent BBWAA for screwing the pooch again
