This Astros team is an embarrassment to Major League Baseball.  How are they supposed to compete in the AL West?

Top five salaries on the team...

RHP Bud Norris ($3 million)
1B Carlos Pena ($2.9 million)
RHP Jose Veras ($2 million)
LHP Wesley Wright ($1.025 million)
RHP Philip Humber ($850,000)

And they just dumped their SS, Jed Lowrie ($2.4m).

Not to mention they have one of the worst farm systems in baseball. And there was talk about even shopping Norris. Poor Norris...the only team he had consistant success against was the Cardinals.

This team will be bad for a while barring some absolute miracle.

I guess the up side is that they will be decent fade material.  Maybe I will wager against them in 2 team ML parlays to bring the price down on some favorites I want to hammer this season.

Give them a few years to get a few more top draft picks and we'll see where they are then.

They won't compete for at least 3 years but neither will Miami. I'd look for a complete rebuild to start in Houston.

Their farm system is deep and they have prospects with a lot of potential at many positions. High ceiling type players.

THEY HAD BY FAR THE BEST DRAFT OF 2012 AND HAVE MADE SOME GOOD TRADES TO BUILD UP THE MINOR LEAGUE DEPTH.

How can we even debate them having a good farm system? It's one of the deepest out there and not only that, but they are going to continuously having good draft position for the next few years to further the depth. You can bet on Houston being a contender again

Maybe I'm wrong. Of course they're better and deeper. But when trading away pieces, because they used to have one of the worst systems, they were in no position to demand top prospects in return. So until some of these guys come up and do something...why should I believe it?

This probably won't be a great idea this season. Do you think the books are fools? I think they're well aware that the public will be prepared to fade the Astros all season long. They will then inflate the lines on those games, and you'll constantly be betting into -EV.

A strategy that I've discovered in regards to the Astros over the last 2 seasons is they tend to lose games in bunches. If you were to fade Houston after every loss over the course of the last 2 seasons you'd be up about 25 units per season. Assuming that they lose 100+ this year (which is pretty safe to say based on playing in the AL), odds are the pattern will continue this season. I'll have a separate bankroll strictly for this experiment.
