After Verlander and Miggy, let's break it down a little...


C Avila > Martin

DH Martinez > Jones/Posada

3B Peralta has better numbers than A-Rod this year and is swinging a pretty decent bat.

Pitchers? 


Mad Max, Fister...much rather have them going than an inexperienced Nova and an experienced Freddy Garcia.

Valverde? How about 49 for 49 in save chances this year?


Watch out, this Tigers team is extremely dangerous.

Peralta has played a lot of third in his career, but yes, this year, mostly SS

Yeah the Yanks played Boston/Tampa a bunch of games in September.  Boston wasn't playing like a 30 games over .500 type squad in September. 

The confidence exhibited in a team who is even contemplating throwing Garcia in a best of 5 is confusing.

Interesting.  I would like to know what those numbers are if we take out all Red Sox games as they played like a 100 loss team past month.

Tigers have a better record against the AL East than the Yankees.  Most people would be surprised by that.  Not that either stat matters.  I just think the Tigers are a better team than NY since acquiring Fister & getting everyone back in lineup.  It will definitely be a heavily bet series.

Possibly the silliest statistic ever written. Match ups and probabilities have so much more to do with it. That explains why books set the lines where they do, because Joe sixpack has to love his powerful "team" with 0 consideration for anything relevant.

I'll take Detroit in game #1 with Verlander pitching. After that, I may just watch that series.

Grab the opportunities when they pop up, but don't get carried away with handicapping the outcomes of these series. Did anyone see Boston ending up where they did? Could anyone have foreseen Tampa Bay pulling off the upset they pulled last night? Is St. Luis for real, or do they revert to mediocrity?

Baseball is awfully hard to predict.

Are lines better online than the sportsbook in Vegas?....Bodog has Tigers 7/1 and Pinnacle has them +880...ESPN said MGM has them 4/1

AFN- funny statement! Do you follow covers? My record spoke for itself. I hit over 61% in pucks pool and made plenty of money this season.However, I'm a little bit of a homer as a die hard Yankees fan and yes I agree Detroit is good. What I meant to say is other than Miggy - I'm not concerned about their bats. Max scherzer hasnt been good the 2nd half and Doug Fister? I wish him luck against jeter- cano- tiex- arod-

Why is Jim Leyland going with 4 starters in a 5 game series? I don't agree with that.

Martinez, Avila, Peralta all good bats.  I'd be less worried about Fister and more worried about Nova/Garcia to be honest.

I made a homer bet on the Tigers to win the Division(2:1), the League(11:1), and the World Series(25:1) before the season started. I also have the Rangers(11:1) to win the World Series.

As a Tiger fan I am a bit worried about the Yankees series but I do feel like, from top to bottom, the Tigers have better pitching. I really think they can beat the Yankees.

I dont think DET has the depth, talent or experience to get past NY
@650 id take TEX to win WS rather then DET
DET will most likely not get swept by NY so there mayb some value somewhere ...mayb today @ 120 just not @ 130 for the series

I like the O7 today if anything

If you're going to compare, it's moot to pick the three or four slots where the Tigers have a DECIDED advantage.  Do the entire team please... (I am not 100% familiar with who the Tigers starters at every position are today - so I used the players that played the most game per position - sue me if I got one or two wrong)

C  Avila > Martin
IB Cabrera > Teixeira
2B Cano > Santiago/Raburn
3B ARod (assuming he plays 3B) > Inge (as bad as ARod has been this year, please don't try to debate this point or it'll show you totally lack objectivity)
SS Peralta > Jeter (as a Yankee fan, this shows my objectivity - if it was closer, I would give Jeter a bump for his playoff experience - but it's not)
LF Gardner = Young/Raburn
CF Grandy > Jackson
RF Swisher > Ordonez / Dirks
DH VMart > Posada 

SP Detroit > New York
Bullpen New York > Detroit 
Closer Mo > Valverde (Tiger fans will point to Valverde being 49/49 in save chances which is great.  I'll point to Mo having better ERA/WHIP/K per 9IP and the fact that he's Mariano Rivera)

Can Detroit win this series?  Absolutely.  If I were betting on it (I never bet against the Yankees - but the money for this series doesn't provide me with the proper return based on the risk to bet ON the Yankees) I would probably take the Tigers at plus money.  But to say that the Tigers are clearly the better team is ... laughable.  Both teams have great players - and both teams have areas in which they have a decided advantage.  IF the Yankee starters perform slightly above average - the Yankees will win this series.  Robertson/Soriano/Ayala and Logan are a great bridge to the greatest post season pitcher since Babe Ruth (or Bob Gibson). 

Prediction:  A terrific series that goes five games.  Since I have no money on this series - I'll take the Yankees in five.
