Not to belabor my point, but here's some numbers from tonight's game...
Lackey gave up 4 walks and hit one batter, his highest number of walks for the whole season.
In 7 innings its easy to compare pitch counts because he's gone 7 innings (or 8 in one game) in 6 straight games... His 113 pitches tonight was the 2nd highest of the 6 games, and only by 3 pitches. The other 4 games were less, a few by a lot, with a couple under 100.
His percentage of strikes to balls was 3rd worst over the last 6 games.
From Lackey's numbers, there's no way you can say the Ump had a large strike zone in this game. All the numbers show BALLS were being called at a fairly high rate, or higher than usual, which makes sense because Lackey looked lousy.
And since I watched the game, I can tell you for a fact that A's hitters chased a lot of crap pitches; again can't blame the Ump....
