I think it gives them a much better chance as they did last year obviously. Jose Reyes is the best leadoff hitter in the game to me, unless Mike Trout keeps having superman years. We will see if Encarnacion will have another good year. Johnson and Buehrle will be able to bounce back. If Johnson is back to his old self he definently be one of the best pitchers in the game. Morrow is proven now and I would put him as the ace. Romero has pitched well enough to win for that team, but gives up a lot of runs. They are a contender because the AL really is not that good to me at all. No team in the AL would have been able to beat any of those teams in the NL this year in the playoffs. I wouldnt be that excited until I seen this team perform together for an entire season. They still have to battle the Yankees and the Orioles. To me the Orioles have the best chance of winning the division by far. You can't make one trade and all of a sudden be a great team. The best part of this trade for the BlueJays is Jose Reyes, his production at the front of that line up will really help this team. They have some good small pieces to the puzzle like Kelly Johnson, Benafacio, Kyle Drabek, JA Happ, and Brad Lincoln. Hopefully the big trade will bring sellout crowds almost every night which will help this team just like it helped the Giants. No matter how good your offense is, you need your pitcher to step up and throw 7 innings strong and you need your bullpen to be lights out. The team will also have a new manager so this team might take a couple years to mesh together. They will not get a great manager like Dusty Baker, Davey Johnson, or Bob Melvin to just turn it around in one year. We will see what happens, but I think Orioles still win this division while the Yankees and BlueJays fight for second.

Also to add to my write up, the Marlins didn't do anything wrong in my opinion. They picked up those players and it did not help their team and it wasn't going to help their team. Now they got rid of Reyes, Bell, Johnson, Buhrle, and whoever else was eating their payroll and now they are back to square one. Yes it was a mistake to sign all of them, but might as well fix the mistake now than later. People who think this is a huge mistake know nothing about baseball. This team got a good cheaper shortstop, good young major leaguers, and some really good minor league prospects which no one will talk about. This team was absolute shit and not that many fans showed up with the big stars so fuck it. They only made the playoffs twice and both times they won the WS and both times they traded their players away after. Time to rebuild the team from the ground up while saving their money for later. They will probably have a better record than last year with this player. Not a bad trade at all for the Marlins, you dont need those players to win a World Series.

In a sense I agree with you East Oakland. I think its the way the Marlins owner goes about things that rub fans the wrong way.

I love this deal. AL east is a tough place to play. Jay are not done yet. Watch for A.A. to be moved next. 

It's OK on paper, but the winter meetings haven't happened yet and some of those guys will be more trade bait. Johnson is causing a lot of excitement here, but he is on the downhill side of a great career and the A.L. designated hitters and a hitters park for a home park could be tough on him. We shall see, we shall see. BOL Jays fans.

I fail to understand why so many people are showering negative if, ands, and buts. This is one of the greatest trades in Toronto sports history. My biggest worry is resigning Johnson, but I'm sure AA has it under control. We picked up a top 10 pitcher in the league which we have been begging for. We easily have the fastest team in the league, as well as arguably the best lead off hitter. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I don't see how we dont make a charge for the division this year. I'm not saying we'll win it, but well be in it late in the season.

Nicoloni could end up being the best pitcher in this trade.  JJ is great but shoulder issues.

He will make more money on the open market and this will be his first time being able to test the open market. He will also have a better idea after the season how he likes Toronto and if he wants to sign an extension.

I think the chances are he tests the open market even if he does want to stay in Toronto. He has shoulder injuries so this could be his last big contract if he were to suffer another injury during that contract.

great deal for toronto as they obviously have no problem taking on payroll....seems some teams outside the top markets aren't afraid to pay and make a run when they figure a good opportunity presents itself....i remember when b.j. ryan and a.j. burnett were their big moves to contend....

I didn't say anything negative I just evaluated the trade. I do think that Toronto will be in the race, but at the same time it is a hard division to play in. Tampa Bay will be an above average team and the Yankees will always be in the race with the talent they have regardless if Arod leaves and they dont keep Ichiro or Nick Swisher. I look for the Yankees to sign someone good to a short contract. I still think after the trade the Orioles are the best team in the division and then Yankees. Toronto on paper seems like a better all around team than the Rays because the Rays have a horrible offense.

I dont think Johnson is a top 10 pitcher right now, so that comment was made out of excitement and not performance. I'm not exactly sure where you got that number from. Dont get me wrong Johnson was a great pitcher, but he is not the same pitcher. Now that he is in this ballpark and pitching against much better hitters, he will have trouble just like last year. I'm a firm believer that if you are a great pitcher at one point in your career you can always return to that status or close to it. He has to work on his mechanics and really put in some time. I am just stating the facts and what may work against him. If I was the manager I would start Morrow as the ace, because he is a great young pitcher that has already had success and will have success next year as well.

But again, I strongly believe that the Orioles will win the division in a close race while Toronto fights for a wild card MAYBE. I have to see a couple games to really get a feel because teams like the Angels will be in the wild card race as well as the A's, Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland.

Orioles are going to take a big step back IMO.  Teams usually do after they make a big step forward.

I really dont care about the odds, I would rather them make the O's +355 because then I will take them. They are moving in the right direction with a lot of young players, good pitching, and a great bullpen. Not to mention they HAVE a coach, you might know him he is a really good as well.

I love how over valued the Orioles will be coming into this season. They had way too many things go their way this year, yes, I'm saying they needed a whole lot of luck to win.

Baltimore was 29-9 in 1 run games and 14-2 in extra innings, this was extremely lucky and can guarantee these won't be the results next season. They were also lucky enough to play i9n a division that was an absolute disaster last year. Toronto had more injuries to their starters than I've ever seen in sports. Boston was an absolute wreck and finished below 500 for the first time in years, Tampa was good, but was way too reliant on pitching. And the Yankees were an old veteran team that collapsed down the stretch and ran out of gas. The AL East hit rock bottom last year, and it is clearly represented by the Orioles winning the division.

I'm not simply stating this because I'm a Jays fan, but because it is fact. The Jays will come into next season with a much better line up, pitching staff, and bullpen. I'm not saying that this will necessarily translate into success on the field, but on paper this certainly holds true.

The Jays were in a position to challenge for a wild card last year until their team seemingly got hit with the worst injury bug I've seen. Adding a top 10 pitcher (if healthy), a 34 year old Buerlhe who has the ability to win you 16 games with an era in the 3's, arguably the best lead off hitter and an anual 300 hitter, another speedy player that can start/fill in at basically any position, and a veteran catcher who can knock the ball out of the park (Buck played great when he was here a few years ago)

I agree with thorpe that the Yanks will open as the favourite to win the AL East, with Toronto right behind them.
