"The transtion to the rotation beings."
 
The Yankees are planning to move Joba into the rotation. He threw 35 pitches today in his 2 innings of work adding a changeup to arsenal. He will be slowly increasing his innings, and he may not just be the 8th inning man for long. During this "transition", he may pitch the 7th and 8th innings, or do what he did tonight and pitch the 8th and 9th. This means he will most likely not pitch in back to back games unless it is 100% needed.
 
Just an update for you fans and gambler out there. If you plan on betting the Yanks, or against them as you all do, take it into consideration that Joba may or may not be available, which means Kyle Farnsworthless would be pitching the 8th which is good for all who bet against the Yanks in a close game.

I know there starting pitching is lousy but this is a horrible move...

Id like to think they were grooming him for the eventual closer spot..those are harder to come by...

I think he can become a very effective starter, but I don't think he's ready for it just yet. I think they still need to groom him a bit more and decide right now what his future position will be.

If you want him to be a starter, then I suggest maybe sending him down to AAA ball for a short while to allow him to begin starting games down there instead of just throwing him in against an MLB lineup.

If the plan is just to make him a starter till Mo retires and then put him in the closer spot they are dumb. We will see how it works, but they will either be geniuses or goats after this move. Very risky.

send him to trip a and start or throw him in the fire now as soon has he has the endurance to go 7 or so

but hes gonna get rocked.. rays, boston, if the fucking blue jays can start hitting, and orioles have a good game time to time.. hes in trouble, as are the yanks

I may not have put it the way I should have. Here is some more information.
 
He's not going straight to the rotation. He will spend probably about 3 more weeks in the bullpen, get his innings up, and then go down to triple A for probably 2-3 starts, maybe more, then come back up and start in the bigs. They are doing this because they have a rule on the young guys to increase their innings to 40 more than last season. They are thinking that if they keep Joba in the bullpen for the entire season, that will get him maybe 45-50 innings or so, and all they can do the next season would be able to pitch him 85-90 innings. So they are going to get him the innings, which increase 40 from last season(including minor league innings, 88.1 innings if I'm not mistaken as a starter), and work from there. By season's end, he should have over 100 innings, and then in the offseason, they can figure out where they will put him after they check out what he is going to do as a starter in the bigs.

Mid season is not the time to make him a starter.  If they were thinking about it, they should have done it during spring training...

you guys are idiots, just hating on the yanks. Joba was a starter before he got called up and will be again. He throws too many different pitches to be just a setup/closer. Its a great move by them, but not surprising.  The offense will come around, everyone knows that. Its like adding a starter. Wang is pitching great ( except for sunday) and pettite will have his usual strong summer. They were worse of last year at this point in terms of record and games behind and the sox were stronger and they still made a run

Made a run, but, did they win the division?

Right now, again you need to look at wildcard teams.

Tampa is MUCH better ( no relief pitching but decent starters and good lineup )

Wouldn't count on Sterois Pettitte to get stronger as the year goes along....

1 year older, and no roids / hgh

First of all as for the steroids issues, im not buying for a second that basicall a member of the bosox organization ( mitchell) would have mentioned a bigtime name on his team. The entire league was on roids so i could care less about that. I just think its funny the amount of people who are bashing the yanks because they are having theire first truly down year since 1993. Jealousy is what that sounds like to me? As for last year, did they win the east? No, but coming back from 14.5 to 1.5 isnt to bad and it was the first time in 9yrs they didnt win the east. The main difference so far this year with boston and nyy is the sox are hitting much better. But there bullpen is horrid leading up to papelbon, they have 2 young pitchers as well in there rotation, 1 of which is struggling and on the dl. Beckett honestly looks closer to 06 from than 07 which is bad for boston. Still early on that i know.

and tampa is not MUCH better. This is there first good stretch in there pathetic history and people say they are winning the east. Kazmir is a walking dl stint, and shields is decent but nothing special. Edwin jackson and garza? Please. This team is playing above its heads right now. Hughes and kennedy will be good starters at some point as will joba. Bash them now, but they will get back in this and this will be there down year for the next few year.

I really thought that the Yanks would groom him to be the closer the same way that they groomed Mariano....even though they signed Mariano in the offseason, I personally believe that Joba has displayed a much better personality for the closer role than as a starter.....when you look at some of the great closers (and, yes, Mariano is not going to fit my description....he has been the greatest)...the great ones all had that fire and body type that intimidated the hitters....that's Joba....I just don't see him carrying that personality and body language through 6-8 innings....

first of all as a sox fan you should just kill yourself for stupid comments like the rest of your dumbass fanbase.  Joba was a starter in the minors, and throws too many pitches to be limited to be a closer. They can find another closer somehow. Theres no replacing mo anyways

Yep just saw on ESPN Joba is slowly going to be worked into the rotation.  Seems like he is a #4 or #5 starter, but has the potential to progress into something special.  The Yanks big problem is SP, I think Mussina and Pettitte are washed up and the young guns keep getting hurt.

Hank Steinbrenner can BUY starters....you cannot buy sensational relief.....
