Mariners, King Felix Agree To 7-Year Deal

For $175 million and this will be the largest contract for a pitcher (Sabathia...7-year $161 million was the previous high).

Good for him. Felix, Verlander, Kershaw and Halladay, I believe, are the best pitchers in baseball, and I can't say he's not deserving of being the highest paid pitcher in baseball.

Hopefully the Yankees cry unfair and try suing the MLB because they didnt get a chance to sign him next year.

Yet another hit to the Yankees, love it

Pineda trade great for the AL East. Shoulder problems are never 100%. Old PED falling apart players, an over the hill SS who cant even play beer league average D

I will be taking the under for the Yankees this year without a doubt. The perfect storm for disaster. Cant wait to listen to WFAN all summer and hear the moaning

Mariners make small strides. They tried this when they traded for Bedard but the injury ruined that and they had to start over. Now lets see if this will play dividends.

I told you the Mariners would throw everything at Felix feet. Yankees were never in the picture.

I've been saying it for years, that Felix wasn't going anywhere.  He and his family ABSOLUTELY LOVE Seattle as a city. (Mainly his wife)  And he's said for years, as long as he can see strides being made to win...he wasn't going anywhere.

Well deserved, and even more so when you know this guy is a competitor.  He isn't going to get his pay day and sit back on it...

I really hate long term deals for pitchers.        While it didn't affect his numbers or effectiveness, the mysterious decline in velocity at only age 26 that he experienced has to be some pause for concern when talking 7 years at 25 mil per. I enjoy watching him and it is cool watching the home fans absolutely come to life during his starts and I hope this deal works out for the Mariners as well as the King. He is the face of that franchise and they absolutely needed to lock him up, but 7 years....

It is Seattle. I have never been there...but in my opinion that place would be dead without him. There is always a bigger crowd knowing King Felix is on the mound. Come on give some props to the Mariners.

Great for The Mariners, they sure do look as if they want to compete sooner then later. It will be interesting because this contract should serve a pretty good benchmark for Kershaw and Verlander who both hit free agency soon and have voiced that they would like to remain where they are. Just my opinion but Verlander is likely going to get more then both of these guys and I don't think 200 million is far fetched.

 I'm not sure this was the smartest money move for the M's, but compared to what they've done over the past decade it's one of their better ones.................pissing away $$ on guys like Chone Figgins & Richie Sexson has been their MO.

 Seattle has lost a lot of stars to FA.............I'm glad to see they wanna keep this one in town for a while.

With the fastest declining attendance in ALL OF SPORTS over the last 5 years, it seems like they signed him out of desperation rather than a prudent business decision. IOWs, what's this going to change--in terms of a WS championship--if other major holes in the teams' arsenal (i.e., power hitting, speed, etc.) aren't being filled? Not to mention, Felix wanted to stay in Seattle so it seemed the front office had some leverage to work with as well and didn't need to make the move so soon, IMO.

I know Felix has been a major bright spot for the team, obviously, but to throw (no pun intended) a lot of money at a guy who only plays once every five games, and produces no offense, is only a recipe for more of the same...

They're going to need a lot of guys to have career years and then maybe we can get some of that out-of-the-blue '95 "Refuse to Lose" magic back in the ballpark once again!

Deal is now on hold. During his physical something with his elbow was detected. That would explain the decrease in velocity last season. Often before Tommy John surgery is needed it is preceded by declining velocity, which is then often gained back after the surgery.

Good for him, but stupid for baseball. No one is worth that much to a team, no one. It's already been proven year over year a team can compete with a very low payroll, why overspend like this on one guy?

Felix and his agent tried to pull a fast one on the Mariners.. They know damn well that there was a problem with the elbow but did not mention it to the Mariners. The Mariners only found out about the elbow by having Felix take the physical...so unethical on Felix. Wait, this is baseball where almost every players take ped's, so this is normal then.

WTF, low payroll, they are the worst team in their division. A low payroll will never help the Mariners compete and they need to pay over the value for players to even play for this team.

In a way glad for the Mariners but also they were fools for paying the guy that type of money in the first place. Greedy fat person will be long time done in 7 yrs anyway. Then what Mariners,cry about the money due to an unusable asset.
