but can u really ever win a championship using moneyball?
young talent evolves into star players and then u just let them go to other teams. essentially u are developing superstars for other teams in the league who are aiming for championships while the A's try to stay 'competitive'...no?

Good to see my thread is picking up speed..I appreciate all of your comments and some your support!  I was at the game tonight and wow we took it to them!  The Angels crowd was shellshocked!!!  The game tomorrow between Saunders and Smith is a toss up.  The young lefty Smith is an unknown and he might have a slight edge on the Angels..at least for 3 innings..and Saunders even though he is hot has a plus 5 era vs the A's lifetime.  Basically if the A's are a dog..take them again..they will probably lose to santana because he owns the green and gold..I'd favor Dush over Mosley in the 4th game!

If you can make the playoffs, you can win a World Series.  The MLB playoffs are essentially a crapshoot.. Just ask the Marlins, the White Sox, and the Cardinals.  Billy Beane has proven year in year out that the A's are playoff contenders.. therefore that automatically makes them World Series contenders.. because again.. MLB playoffs are a crapshoot.

For any A's fans that didn't get a chance to watch the game today, they had a promo game. For every hit the A's took a buck off field level tickets for Sundays game against Tex. Well tickets usually go for 24bucks and after that stomping of the Angels tickets are only 4 bucks. Type in "Hits" when purchasing the tickets for field level in the promo box. Should be a sell out after all those hits tonight!  Also something to think about when playing the game on Sunday!.

    A's Depth Chart
    Last years BA

    C Suzuki .249
    1B Johnson .236
    2B Ellis .276
    3B Chavez .226
    SS Crosby .240
    LF Brown .257
    CF Denorfia .283 (2006)
    RF Buck .288
    DH Cust .256

As you can see they cant hit at all with nobody over .288...they cant run at all with Brown leading all these guys in SB's last year with 12...Cust was the only one of these guys to break 20 HR...Nobody broke 82 RBI's....Nobody broke 84 runs scored...I dont think there is a team in a baseball that would trade offenses with the A's. And again, they dont have incredible pitching. Rich Hardens great, but always hurt. Huston Street is also pretty good but battled an arm injury last year if memory serves. Thats about it. If you're looking for an easy way to waste money...laying a futures bet on the A's to win it all is one of the easist ways to do it.

might want to rethink your thoughts about last year, if you know anything about baseball everyone changes from season to season. What do you think about them now? Top 5 in the AL in runs scored and they play in a pitcher friendly park......the A's were never known for stolen bases, Ricky was the man but since we find ways to get runners on base (by working the count) and then moving runners over, o yea our defense has to be considered one of the best in the league, I do not know the numbers but im pretty sure we are close to the top in DPs and im sure we are close to the top year after year. (cust did make a routine catch into an error that cost the A's a huge inning when LAA put up 5 runs to take the lead, but man he can up with a smash to take the lead right back, and that also led to the marry-go-round inning the put the game out of reach)

A's will finish 3rd in their division and well under .500. C'mon guys, it's only the beginning of May. There's a better chance my Rays make the playoffs than the A's.

BigGame90 thanks for adding to my thread!  Way to show the Green and gold love!!!  Too bad I won't be in the Bay area on Sunday or I'd go the game!  I think it will be a great homefield advantage on Sunday for sure!!!
    TEX: Jennings (0-5, 8.56 ERA)
    OAK: Smith (2-1, 2.73 ERA)

The potential is there for a sweep with Blanton vs Padilla and Gaudin vs Feldman beforehand!  I'd say out of the 3 games, tomorrow's game is the toughest.  If Blanton can beat Padilla look for the broom!  Go A's all year long!!!

The A's have a shot every year, yea its early but if you follow the A's this is by far one of their best starts. This team usually starts out slow, and then heats up after the break... E-Mac you may come back to this thread and regret that later on, don't hop on the Sea train, its going nowhere.... But the Rays are lookin good right now, but the A's as a club have more experience closing out a season.... GL you do have a promising team....

E-Mac you obviously don't know this team or organization very well!  I'd be shocked if they don't finsih above .500!  The green and gold are in it for the long haul this year.  They have depth and have great team chemistry...outside chances of even Harden coming back and a great Defensive addition if nothing else in Chavez!  I like your Rays and even went overboard fielding Upton,,now hurt, Crawford and being smart enough to draft Longoria and then unleashing him as soon as he got brought up!  They don't have a better chance then the A's as far as making the palyoffs..lest's be real!  If your a Dolphin fan by the way good luck..Parcell is over the hill..he may know talent but his best years are behind him!  Go Cowboys!!!

Thanks Gusto, i appreciate the thread, the A's are my team. I grew up in the Bay and have followed this team my whole life. Sooner or later its gonna happen. Ill admit i was a lil skeptical at the start of the season after trading Haren, but i love the young talent this team brings out each year. I haven't been to any of the Cats games yet but i heard we have a young stud throwing that people say will see the show here shortly. I wouldn't be surprised to see the bats continue, this series usually scores some runs.... ill keep making stops throughout the year, this will stay a great thread!!!

C'mon, we both know the Rays have much more talent than the A's. Upton, Crawford, Pena and Longoria are all more talented than any hitter Oakland has. Beane is the best GM, but the way that team is ran they won't win a World Series, they'll just always be competitive. They grow superstars with their farm system and then they trade them away for other great young prospects until they get good and then the cycle keeps going. Your young pitchers are off to nice starts, but do you seriously expect that production to keep up? Or Emil Brown to continue being an RBI machine?

I like Barton because from what I've seen he's a very patient hitter that will take whatever the pitcher gives him and can draw walks, and they have a good young core of starters, but TB even has better pitchers. Kazmir and Shields is once again better than any starter on Oakland. I guess you could argue Harden, but he's always hurt.

The only thing the A's have going for them more than Tampa Bay is the division they play in. They play in arguably the easiest division in baseball and really only have two teams to contend with (Rangers are a mess). I'll make sure to bump this thread when Oakland is 75-87 at the end of the season.

As for my Dolphins, yes they will need luck to contend this year. How you can admit Parcells knows talent then say he is over the hill is beyond me. He was brought here just for the fact that he does know talent and the draft proved that to me with great picks like Long and Henne.

How exactly are you an Oakland fan and a Dallas fan by the way? Shouldn't you be a Raider fan?

    Hey Fellas,

Big A's fan here. Always on Athleticsnation.com

I'm a believer in this team mainly because of Barton and BroCro has finally figured it out.  We need his bat to be at .275 and not .225...

Also, Billy always brings in good pitchers, ie Smith and Eveland.

One thing I do disagree with BigGame about is our D. It sucks and we've made the most errors in the AL after the Rangers. Its sad. Our outfield D is poor and our corners infielders are below average. BroCro and Ellis are superb but having been up to their usual standards thus far.

    Go A's!

Emac, Greyhound and Err thanks for chiming in!  Yes, Emac I do think the A's are a better team..Pena even though he somehow smacked 45 bombs last year is a poor man's Cust!  I'll take a streaky Cust anyday for less money then Pena.  Crawford is real good and so is Upton but their young.  Give me moneyball anyday..TB is unfortunately in the wrong division to win!  I think Emil Brown will thrive in Oakland and yes produce too all year!  Once the team moves to Cisco Field in Fremont they will start to pay players rather then trade always.  Kazmir is a good young arm and Shields is a player but they still need to prove all that they can be perennial winners!  Blanton, Gaudin, Eveland, Smith, Duscherer, Harden and with Santiago Casilla, Andrew Brown, Keith Foulke and Huston Street...very solid pen.(Best Team ERA in MLB too)  I can thank my Dad for introducing me to the Cowboys back in the day of the T&A cheerleaders being hot and the man in the hat..Landry..alltime great coach!(Parcells can't hold his jock) Roger Staubach is my alltime fave QB too!  I saw him play when I was young but was old enough for him to make an a great impression on me!  Good to see the A's not make an error today and pull one out..that Greg Smith kicks ass!  Greyhound don't worry the D will improve..other then an occasional Cust guffaw the green and gold will be alright!  emac remember the A's are a great organization and always find ways to compete..since 1968 they have the 4th best winning percentage in baseball and have also won the 2nd most WS titles behind the Yankees!(6 Yanks to 4 A's...should have been more...Finley ass screwed us fans and Steroid brothers choked two)  They would have won more if they had the cash too..I know..moneyball can only take you so far..soon this will end before the team moves into Cisco Field and Beane will be lauded as one of the greatest baseball men in history!  Let's go Oakland!!!!  Let's go Oakland!!!  Green and gold forever!!!!

it's funny watching baseball tonight + an oakland highlight comes on.. Kruk + Phillips usually just don't know what to say + just let the highlight go.. it happened twice tonight + it happens a lot.

Oakland has no marquee players or personalities + everything they do goes against the traditional logic of Kruk + Phillips etc..
funny stuff.. hope the A's continue dominating.

Thanks for contributing to my thread gameto11...nice avatar!  If you and others keep grabbing the A's you''l collect plenty of the green your holding!    I said at the beginning of the year that this Oakland team would surprise much like last year's Dbacks.  We actually have more weapons then last year's Dbacks and are exceptionally deep.  The pitching staff as a whole is phenomenal!
I think this team gained alot of confidence coming out of Spring training too and it has snow balled!  Adding the Big Hurt for his leadership and big play ability was huge too!

yea i hear ya.. Oakland will be undervalued all year.. especially when smith + duscherer + gaudin start.. (i think people know about blanton + harden).

They have about 11 very capable hitters who they can plug in + out of that lineup.. so u never have to worry about last second lineup scratches.

Oakland will end the season with the best cover record.
