They traded right handers Jesse Hahn and RJ Alvarez to the A's for Norris, RHP Seth Streich and an international signing slot (#117 worth $144.1K). I like Norris and he looks like he'll be the starting catcher this season until Hedges is ready down the line.
Josh Johnson's deal is a steal because his base salary is around $1 million with incentives that could bump it all the way up to $7-$8 million. THAT is the type of deals I like. Make players EARN their money based on what they do THAT season and not what they did the year before. I'm not sure if he'll ever be what he once was but the lack of risk/potential reward is great value.
And with the addition of Norris, they were able to trade Ryan Hanigan for Middlebrooks. Hanigan is a good catcher but I really like Middlebrooks. Injuries have hurt him but I think he's more of a player we saw when he first came up in 2012 when he hit .288 with 15 homers and an OPS of .835 in just 75 games but he has been on a massive decline since. He's only 26 so if he can show that 2012 wasn't a fluke then this is a steal and he won't be a free agent until 2019.
The Padres are making MOVES

I think the Padres and Johnson are both whistling through the graveyard on this one. No risk to either as the Padres are not putting the money up front and Johnson has few, if any, ways to earn a few more bucks before he hangs up his spikes. Maybe they get a decent year out of him, or he helps bring along a young and talented corps that will be around a lot longer than him, but no one is going to propose a 1, 2 or 3 slot for Josh. Those days are gone.
Now and then even a BLIND squirrel can find an acorn
