The Chicago White Sox will begin a new
series in Arlington against the Texas Rangers this evening. Chicago has
been trying to play the spoiler role for a few consecutive series now,
and will continue to do so on a lower level against a below .500 team
that is still miraculously in the Wild Card hunt. However, let’s see how
this one may play out.
It is going to be a hot and humid day in the Dallas area this evening, which can help carry flyballs. However, there are a number of things that will work against the offense today.
First off, is the harsh travel involving the White Sox. Chicago is
coming off a redeye flight into a time zone two hours ahead, as they
likely did not arrive in Dallas until 5:00 am in the morning. To make
matters worse, it has been scientifically proven that eastward jetlag
has a detrimental effect on slugging performance of teams travelling two
or more time zones from the day before. Either the White Sox bench a
significant number of players of their already inexperienced lineup, or
they ride with a near full lineup of lagged bats today. While Rangers
Starting Pitcher Tyson Ross has been struggling heavily with command, I
expect him to find his groove a little bit today with his three pitch
arsenal. He will most likely use the sinker and cutter to avoid dead
smack contact in that heat/humidity.
Now although Texas has been
swinging well lately and took it to the Tigers well in the last series,
they will now face a guy who they have never seen before and who happens
to be a top prospect of the White Sox. I touted Reynaldo Lopez last
week in our first five under win, and I will back his ability again
today. Lopez showed us exactly what I expected him to last week, as he
flashes a nasty four seamer, backed up by a very deceiving changeup, and
a curveball in his back pocket. He should be able to limit the hits
against the Rangers the same way he did against the Royals. Give it at
least three at bats before the Rangers somewhat figure him out as a
team.
It is clear from my insight, that I am banking on the two
starting pitchers to do well today…and that I surely want nothing to do
with these bullpens in this type of weather.
