It is at the official scorers discretion. However, I believe that exception is reserved for situations in which a game is delayed by a long rain stoppage in the 5th inning. I still think it would be within reason to make the exception for this game.
I found this online:
If the starter leaves with the lead, but does not pitch 5 innings, and his team maintains the lead, the scorekeeper assigns the win to the "most effective reliever" (score keeper's discretion)

So how I'm reading this is...Dickey won't get the win but neither will Price (having faced a single batter).
But, again, who cares? These guys don't care about those kind of stats as long as the TEAM wins.

Oops. Somehow I thought he wasn't in the game anymore. Oh well...I doubt Dickey will have anything but a giant smile on his face when the Jays walk off with the win.

I generally support Gibbons, but I think it matters when you are up 7-1 and are one out away from the win and only pitched 80 in the game.
Of course it is about the team winning, but this cant make Dickey feel good considering he earned the right to get the win. He did his job and then some.
Regardless, I am sure the team talks to one another. If Jays win game 5 it will be a moot point hopefully as Dickey can get his shot at another start.

gibbons honestly might not even have realized it. huge lead and the only thing on his mind was get price in there so he doesnt have to answer questions about why the 100 mill dollar man isnt starting game 5. he can make up some bullsht excuses why he had to get him in today. reminds me of the superbowl in 1985 when ditka gave the ball to the fridge on the 1 instead of payton who never got a superbowl td. after the game he was like i didnt even realize walter didnt score.

dude team is up 7-1 he is 1out just 1 out away from getting the win which would be cool considering his age prolly be one the the oldest to get a win in alcs.... he was in no trouble and his manager pulls him..Man is doesn't get more Disrespectful.... KARMA will Get GIBBONS

That's why Gibbons is the manager and we're just a bunch of degenerates on a betting forum. I leave the game decisions up to the guys that are paid to do so. He leaves Dickey in and it becomes 7-4 on one swing and suddenly people start crying about not pulling Dickey before facing Beltre and Choo.

Yes and Ditka said many times it was his biggest regret as a coach.
The only thing I can think of is that when Pete Walker, the pitching coach visited the mount he advised him that he won't be facing the lefties so get the outs. He gave up a single and that was that.
As a coach he has to understand the situation a little better. Of course, if Dickie pitches to the Choo, he hits a double, Price comes in with 2 on, Rangers hit a HR and the lead is cut to 3.
I know this much. If somehow the Jays lose this game, Gibbons is done as coach. This being said, he has stated publicly that he will take any and all heat for his decisions this playoffs. Essentially letting everyone know that his M.O is going to be what it is, he will decide the best moves to win for the team and that's all.
If they win it all nothing else matters. Even if they just win this series he will avoid any criticism. Of course, that's far from certain.

Of course it is about winning, but with such a lead and the fact he wasn't in any trouble throughout the game, there is something to be said about showing courtesy and respect for the fact he went out there and did his job so there is a game 5. He didn't give up 3 runs in the first and force the Jays to burn relievers in a hope of winning, he pitched a great game.
If it hadn't been such a big lead and he hadn't only thrown 80 pitches I could see a different approach. In that spot I think you have to give him a chance for the win with 1 out left to qualify.
Hey, it is what it is. It looks as though Price will be pulled too now, Texas has his number. I hope he is able to get into game one next series...Jays fans need more than 5 games and out this post-season.

listen i 100% believe the only thing on gibbons mind was getting this choke artist out there. if price doesnt pitch enough pitches today he has only 1 reason not to start him next game. he would have to say basically he s a choke artist. i dont envy his position. you dont want to hurt his ego (although wtf right). all gibbons was thinkign about was the press conference and answering questions and making sure price threw not just enough pitches to not start but as we can see hopefully not see the light of day in game 5. you canadians are just nicer then us americans and i mean that will all sincerity..the good news is stroman is gonna be lights out and the jays are moving on

Price is a regular season pitcher. Some guys are meant to get you to the playoffs and not be depended on because they lack whatever it is that the greats of the game have. Price never had that and probably never will.

Yes, he didn't want to have to make an excuse for not starting him game 5. But it's not about being nice, it's about protecting their own behinds. If they basically bump him it will have everyone questioning why they picked him up in the first place if you don't believe in him.
This is why I said I have no problem with him pitching this game, but I do believe Dickey deserved to get that last out for the win. Price will be rewarded for the win by letting the Rangers creep back in, an embarrassing way to earn a win.
Price has had his problems with Texas, so he will be ok if they make it to the next round, just my opinion (and hope).

disagree 100% he was lights out for you! one of the biggest reasons you won the divison. what were the jays in his starts? i dont know off the top of my head but they won almost all of em right? like gambleholic said..some dudes are wired for postseason and some arent. let me tell what you do with him.... you dont start him in game 1. actually i dont when the next series starts and who s available. my point is adjust on the fly now. you didnt think you were getting stroman back this year. well you did. now he s your ace and more then capable. if possible get price matched up agaisnt the other teams 3 or 4th starter and maybe he does enough. i HATE when teams ride high $ money players to the grave just because they are getting paid. and the blue jays clearly arent doing that. most teams would have started him next game. now you win next game and move on knowing he s not the ace. no big deal.

He has been a big reason for the Jays success during the regular season, both in results, attitude and clubhouse confidence. He will be starting next series if they win game 5 Wednesday, nothing worse than game 2.
The problem is that he hasn't pitched well against the Rangers and has been spotty in the post-season. I have no problem with him starting against the Astros or KC, he can still be The Man.

Stroman is going to get injured at some point this post season...
game 5... start stroman, game on the line unless toronto puts up three runs early, they pull him for price. who has been in the pen and tired.... cue to the bullpen without cecil who hasnt pitched in awhile, prolly starting with price bases loaded and BOOM... idiot manager JAYS DONE.
