Well it is finally here...the long await release of 21. Ofcourse the movie has us all excited because it deals with a long standing fantasy of practicly all of us.....hitting it big gambling in Vegas. The movie stars Jim Strugess (the lead in the movie ACROSS THE UNIVERSE), Kate Bosworth (who told People Magazine she got drunk to shoot the love scene in this movie) and Kevin Spacey (Oscar for Best supporting Actor in ALL THE USUSAL SUSPECTS and Oscar for Best Actor in the movie AMERICAN BEAUTY) ...also in the film is Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus in the MATRIX trilogy). The film has a ton of subplot...none of which I will devulge in this posting but I will make a comment that it is interesting to see the moral significance of Fishburne's character and to compare and contrast the function of his characters in 21 and THE MATRIX. Let me just make this simple...THIS IS A MUST SEE FILM. Oh sure anyone could find a flaw or 2 in it if they tried hard enough and really wanted to but the bottom line is the movie is just great entertainment on a multitude of levels so run to the theater at your first available moment and enjoy!!!!!

Running time is 118 minutes. Yes people other than blackjack or gamibling addicts will enjoy the movie because the plot and subplots are intense and varied. Not everything in the main character's life is gambling...he is a student at MIT so the plot is much more varied and relative to the average person trying to figure out life than a gambling movie like ROUNDERS.

There is so much more to the movie than just gambling. How can see the movie and not think about the situation of being incredibly intelligent with a promising future but not have the means (finacial backing) to be able to reach your potential. What would you do in the same situation? The guy changed his entire moral value on working hard towards a goal and it affected all aspects of his life, his relationship with his friends, his interaction with his mother, his feelings about himself, his cash flow and his goals for the future. I just don't understand how any one can watch a movie and miss so much. I guess some of you just can't see the forest because of the trees.

About the only things it had in common with the book was MIT students and the scene in the illicit casino with all those Asians.
But I'm glad to see the movie's a hit. I think Sony had moderate expectations, but it should pull in $80M domestically at the box office. The budget was $35M so with promotion (always multiply the budget times 2), the movie's true cost is a tad above $100M. After DVD and foreign receipts, this movie should gross about $200M.
But I hate that the movie was an ad for Planet Hollywood (nee Aladdin). Though Hard Rock, Red Rock, and the Riviera are also featured, a bulk of the action was at PH. Though I've yet to go there, I just can't help but let go of PH being a cheap Hard Rock knockoff. Not only that, but the original PH chain was a colossal bust. I'll give PH maven Robert Earl some credit for chutzpah. He wouldn't let the brand die its ignominious death. And from all accounts the PH Resort and Casino is performing way about analysts expectations and is close to being profitable so early in its existence.
Though I'm practically loyal to the MGM Grand chain resorts (I get comped rooms many times, so why change), I might give PH a try someday.
Also I got a kick how the Hard Rock in the movie was magically transposed to the strip as a 30-story building, overlooking Caesar's Palace and the Bellagio.

Certainly different opinions on this movie than on the other 21 thread..................myself, loved the book, will wait for the crowds to thin out before I go see it in the theater...............
