the reason is they dont want to start a season without running it every week with no breaks...."the non-stop action packed season"
with the writers strike they only have like 5 episodes filmed and by the time they get them all in the can the season would stretch into the summer and they dont want to do that.....also they cant start the season in the fall because of MLB playoffs and the holidays they cant make it a non stop season....
so January 2009 it is.....and yes it does suck, but thats the reason behind it

theres part of the problem, trying to watch a show 6 seasons deep and giving it a try last year in the 6th season...if you should find yourself with some time, watch the show from the beginning either on the net or rent the dvd and give it a shot...I mean you watch Prison Break so your taste in TV can't be that bad

Today, Fox confirmed that Jack Bauer would battle an international crisis in South Africa in the two-hour prequel set to air on Sunday, November 23 at 8 p.m.
While Jack is busy in South Africa (these scenes were shot on location by the way), the U.S. citizens are welcoming new president Allison Taylor. The network also reveals that these events will take place a few months before Day 7 and will set stage for the drama to be faced by the characters in the new season.
Executive producer Howard Gordon reassures fans by saying the prequel will explore Bauer's complex emotional state of mind and will still feature the suspense they have grown to love and expect from the series.
Day 7 of 24 will air on Mondays at 9 p.m. starting in January 2009. The series will also celebrate its 150th episode during this seventh season.
