All Quiet on the Western Front

caught it the other night on FLIX. this version is the 1979 Hallmark Hall of Fame made for TV production with Richard ("John Boy") Thomas as Paul, Ernest Borgnine as "Kat" Katczinsky and Ian Holm as Himmelstoss which I believe is as good or better than the classic 1930's version with Lew Ayers, Louis Wolheim and John Wray in those roles.

the story was such a powerful anti-war drama that both the 1930 movie AND the book by Erich Maria Remarque were banned in Germany when the Nazis came to power.

it's on FLIX (DISH-tv Ch 333) again Monday Feb 22nd @ 9:20 pst, Thursday Feb 25th @ 12:05 pm pst and Sunday Feb 28th @ 10:45 am pst. it's in standard def BUT a 9X16 "letterbox" format.

well worth watching for anyone that is interested in classic war movies. I give it

Fantastic novel.  Never seen the movie but the story is so good that it would have to be entertaining.

well here's your chance for the 1979 made for TV version and the 1930 "classic" has been on the Turner Classic Movie channel every so often.

like I said, BOTH are EXCELLENT to the point of which one I would recommend in a teaching situation.

btw, I read Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" in high school and I'm suprised that IT'S never been made into a movie. with the critical successs of "There Will Be Blood", which was taken from Sinclair's novel "Oil", I wouldn't be suprised if some production company didn't look into it. GREAT book.
