Slumdog Millionaire started at -400 and was surely bet up to -1400 but is now -4000!
Boyle for director has taken a similar turn, now up to -3500.
Winslett for best actress was -200 and is now -1500.
Ledger was -3300 and is now an astonishing -10,000.
Rourke was -125 then bet up to -255 but is now an astonishing -1000!
I checked on these less than a week ago and now the night of they have locked in these favorites as absolute certainties. The Rourke pick stands out the most, as Penn has to be getting some sort of action.
It does not seem like they are going for "equal action" here, because they have removed all value and I am sure people bet on some of the other options in some categories. It looks like they have information we do not and are making the winners they know are coming as prohibitive to bet on as possible.
Anyone agree or disagree with this thought?

*--This is my first year betting the Oscars (I will go almost undefefeated IMHO except on the longshot 10 dollar bet!) and these line fluctuations are so extreme they have blown my mind. Glad I got in within the first few dyas the odds were posted and plan on doing that every year from here on out.

But that Rourke/Penn thing is pure garbage, agreed. When I saw it twenty minutes ago Penn was even money but -150 is even worse. How can you have one huge and one minor favorite? If Rourke is such a lock then picking Penn should be an upset and it should pay like one.
Good luck on your bets. I am on Rourke for a decent amount myself. Biggest single bet since the Super Bowl and stupidly picking Federer to beat Nadal a half day before that!

Right on. Just a theory. Who knows...

Might just be Bookmaker too, not sure about other books (haven't checked) but Matchbooks lines are nowhere near these. Rourke is -196 right now and Kate Winslet is -400.

Yeah Penn winning fucked my night up too. Notice how the only other nominee he mentions is Rourke. He knew this was his one chance. I disagree with this choice and agree with the posters who said all along that politics would play a part. I was wrong and you guys know this process better than I did.
Next time I will be more cynical than just picking who I thought did the best this year... by far.

I think this is going to make a list of historic bad beats in a few years. Reading various sites around the web virtually everyone thinks Rourke got robbed. Lots of different theories with yours being only one of them (reaction to Prop 8, fear of Rourke's speech, him not being buddy buddy with the actors who voted, many more).
I just hit a 6 team parlay and made that money back but I still feel robbed and like it was a 100% bullshit pick. And this from someone who loves Penn's work and doesn't even mind him getting political.
