Citizen X (1995)

this is one of the best crime dramas I have seen in years. it's on MOMAX (DISH ch 312) @ 1:15 am on Saturday Feb 20th and well worth recording

the basic plot is the Soviet police effort to identify and arrest Ukrainian mass serial killer Andrei Chikatilo who was eventually caught and convicted of killing 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990. it's also the story of lead Detective Viktor Burakov's fight with the Soviet bureaucracy.

in HD ?

no, unfortunately it's NOT in HD. it's a made for TV movie in the  4X3 format that was the standard in 1995.

STILL worth watching though. the acting is excellent esp Joss Ackland as the clueless Communist Party official Bondarchuk and Jeffrey DeMunn as Chikatilo. also the interaction between Stephen Rea as lead detective Viktor Burakov trying to do his job and Bondarchuk who's ideology won't allow him to face the facts of the case is a great story within the story.

you will probably recognize Ackland as the corrupt South African drug dealing diplomate in Lethal Weapon II and the Russian diplomate in The Hunt for Red October.

IF MAX airs "Citizen X" again in HD, I will defiantely record it

well then hopefully it will be on a MAX HD channel sometime in the future

btw, I recorded the 2008 German film Der Baader Meinhof Komplex the other night. it's about the formation of the "Red Army Faction" terrorist group within the German Student Movement in the 1960's and their eventual capture by the West German police. it's in German with subtitles.

haven't watched the whole thing yet. will report back with an opinion when I have completed viewing it.

well I finally watched it last night because the Olympic mens hockey took a break. overly long movie that I thought was written to be sympatetic to those terrorist thugs. somewhat interesting from a history standpoint BUT it would be like some Saudi film producer making a movie about the 9-11 hijackers.

overall I would have to say

IF MAX airs "Citizen X" again in HD, I will defiantely record it

it's on MAX-HD east channel tuesday march 16th @ 11:45 pm pacific time and their west channel wednesday march 17th @ 2:15 am pacific time IF anyone wants to record it.
