It's a shame that this film is largely remembered for the "squeal like a pig" scene. I watched it again over the weekend, and it's probably one of the best 25 films I've ever seen. Well shot. Well acted. Good music. Good story line, and probably the most authentic southern sheriff ever (even if it was played by the author of the book).

It's not underrated. It was talked about for about 20 years....Topic moves on. That scene disturbed me, and that's not why I think it was a well done movie.....

Really liked it when Burt shot that fricking hill billy with his compound bow........
Burt Reynolds in my opinion is underrated.., and doesn't get enough credit for all he's done over the years.....He also gave more exposure to Dom DeLouise who I think is funny as shit.

I actually paddled one of the rivers where some of this was filmed {section 4 of the Chatooga} There is actually a large rock called Deliverance Rock during the run where we would stop to take a break. One of the most challenging + beautiful rivers i ever paddled. I always thought it was an awesome movie as well, but it most certainly did nothing to help the image of Southerners. I still like to watch it to this day for the scenery + the memories it gives me. Great flick
