before there was the horse racing themed "let It Ride" in 1980 and the poker themed "Rounders" in 1998, there was California Split in 1974 with George Segal and Elliott Gould as two poker playing, horse race betting "degenerate" buddies. some VERY funny situations throughout the movie. check out the late "Amarillo Slim" Preston as one of the players in the high stakes poker game finale.
IF you like movies like "Let It Ride" and "Rounders", you should LOVE this one. it doesn't air very often on TV so it's a "must record". plays on Turner Classic Movies Monday Jan 7th @ 9:30 pm pacific time
also on TCM this week are the Jack Nicholson classic "The Last Detail", with the late Otis Young and a young Randy Quaid, which plays right after California Split AND Fritz Lang's classic 1931 German classic crime drama "M" which was the great Peter Lorre's first major movie role which plays Saturday Jan 5th @ 11:45 pm pacific

Rat, Thanks for mentioning "Rounders". I had no idea it was made in 1998. I think a good movie.
"The Last Detail" is a featured movie on TCM this month and I have it TIVO'ed . It's one of those movies that for me will be better the 2nd time around. I've forgotten so much. Didn't remember Quaid was that simpleton in it. Can't wait!
Don't forget that this TCM month has a movie called "Carnal Knowledge" I would suggest this as a must see. Not sure but think Nichols directed in his prime. Good stuff. TVO-ed for sure. Curious if not better today than than the 70's. Lots of young stars in this. Nicholson is very good. "TVO'ed"
"Five Easy Pieces" is scheduled this month on TCM. You must see. Nicholson plays a restrained role and not anything like his late crap. A different actor. Just don't mess up his sandwich order. It'
Then there is "Easy Rider". Critics always say this movie was a big change. I didn't like it so much and think it is a stupid bunch of crap. Not TVO'ed. I don't want to see this dumb movie again. Lame movie.

in my opinion "The Last Detail" is Nicholson's 2nd best movie after "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" both Nicholson and Randy Quaid were nominated for Oscars but didn't win.
"Carnal Knowledge" was pretty good but the best thing about the movie was Ann-Margret Olsson "showing off her shape". my GOD that woman had a body.
for me, the only memorable scene in "Five Easy Pieces" was the diner "wheat toast" scene. everything else was forgetable "arty-smarty" tripe
Nicholson defintely saves what is saveable in "Easy Rider". best part of that movie was the music track. the two CD box set of the movie's music is worth buying for the classic 60's songs used plus added 60's standards

actor Billy Paxton (Aliens, Apollo 13 and Hatfields & McCoys) was on with TCM host Robert Osborne as the "guest programmer". he said he selected both California Split with Elliot Gould and The Last Detail with Jack Nicholson because they were "the two actors in the late 1960's / early 1970's that most influenced his acting style"

Rat, When "Easy Rider" came out I had no idea who Nicholson was but his few minutes were the best of show. I always remembered those scenes with him. A star was born. Your right about the music.
I like "Easy Pieces" for the famous sandwich scene but I'd say the tension with his family and his effort to deal with them was great acting on his part. For him it was restrained and he had lots of help with other actors to make a classic true life sort of movie. If anyone likes Nicholson they should see this early work. I know its slow but that isn't bad if it has serious human themes. He isn't much better as a actor than this. He does grow but after awhile he just grew to Nicholson playing Nicholson. I think he's a sad facade these days.
I saw "Carnal Knowledge" 40+ years ago so can't say much except it was over my head at the time or it was just boring. I hope the re-watch will be good.
I think Paxton is OK as a TMC guest host. His picks are interesting. Do you notice all the guest host seem a little stiff and intimidated at first? I like that they are out of their element and being on edge. Nervous! Makes them seem real and likable.

Killer-B, Yeh that was a bad movie and so were most 60's movies if you look at them from 2013 point of view. The 60's movies were in the middle of change. Everyone loves the movies but young people drive the movie machine and the 60's had no driver.

sorry guys, was NOT as good as I remembered either. thought the early poker scenes were pretty good as was the race track "Egyptian Fem" bit (how many times have YOU been touted off a winner?) and thought the ending in Reno was OK BUT all in all NOT close to either "Let It Ride" or "Rounders" by a LONG shot
