on Turner Classic Movies Thursday Febuary 4th @ 7:00 pm pst
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) with Lew Ayres as Paul Baumer, Louis Wolheim as "Kat" Katczinsky and John Wray as Himmelstoss.
the Erich Maria Remarque book and 1930 movie had such a powerful anti-war message that both were banned in many European countries, most notably Germany under the NAZI's and Italy under the Facisti, and the film in Austraila. was the first film to truly show "the horrors of war" with the message that there is nothing "heroic" about dying for ones country esp if the war is complete bullshit (which most are)
it's part of Turner Classic Movies "31 days of Oscar" this month as it won both Best Picture and Best Director in 1930. it's too bad the TCM couldn't show the 1979 "Hallmark Hall of Fame" remake with Richard Thomas as Paul, Ernest Borgnine as "Kat" and Ian Holm as Himmelstoss back-to-back as comparison. it's is also excellent and loses none of the stories power or message.
it's also a great month for classic Jack Nicholson with Easy Rider, The Last Detail, Five Easy Pieces and, late in the month, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which many believe is Nicholson's greatest roll EVER (although I'm personally partial to "Badass Buddusky in The Last Detail)
