I think The Town gives The Departed a very good run for its money.

I think City Of God is the better of the two but they are pretty similar.

two of the classic early 1930's gangster movies, Jimmy Cagney's "The Public Enemy" and Edward G Robinson's "Little Caeser" are on Turner Classic Movies Tuesday November 23nd @ 1:30 am and 3:00 am eastern.

these are the two movies, along with Paul Muni's 1932 'Scarface", that SET the GENRE for "gangster" in Hollywood that is STILL used TODAY.

worth recording

The Godfather is superior to anything and everything, in my opinion.  However, if you're looking for something you havent seen before, go watch Miller's Crossing asap!  The Coen brothers are widely known for flicks such as The Big Lebowski, Fargo, No Country For Old Men, and blockbuster blowouts of such nature, but if you havent seen Miller's Crossing, you don't know s**t about the Coen brothers.

damn, a lot of movies that should never be placed in the same category as godfather 1 and 2.  (new jack city ) including the departed which is a complete copy and paste job of internal affairs except with white people.  city of god is probably close as is casino.

Godfather

City of God is great, and the others mentioned are very good, but the Godfather is in a class of it's own.

worth recording  

that 1932 Paul Muni "Scarface" is on Turner Classic Movies Friday Jan 21st @ 6:30 PM pst followed by "Little Caesar". worth recording just to compare to the 1983 Al Pacino remake.
