Most of what I read concerning the UN is that we pay most of the bills and they call the shots, almost intentionally.
My impression concerning Rwanda was that the UN saw what they were facing and they felt ill-equipped to deal with the size of the issue, meaning the UN is not a militarily backed organization equipped prepared to face what was happening there at that time, nor has the UN been more than a peace keeping organization in its purpose historically.
Africa is a disaster..and there have been similar and worse massacres compared to Rwanda and I am sure even as we are speaking things are happening.
To connect the dots based on a movie is pretty tough, I just dont agree with what Mik has said that the whole thing could have been stopped had it not been for Clinton.
The people to blame are the government of Rwanda, the people living there and the general state of affairs in Africa..

Rickey,
I dont get that impression at all.

Indeed Africa is at critical boiling points and has been to this day, however to not fully appreciate the enormity of this massacre is slightly off base. It is considered to be perhaps the largest mass killings ever to take place not only in Africa but through the history of all mankind. There is nothing historically on the continent ever to come close to this magnitude based on pure body count and time frame.
Yes the people and government are to blame of course but lives could have been saved without a great deal of complication. The UN is bought and paid for by the United States and does exactly as we instruct them to do. We did not support them so they simply gathered up everybody with blonde hair, blue eyes and a passport. Not a single shot fired by soldiers at one road block.
This link is a fairly simple briefing on the events that led up to the killings and what the motivations were among certain individuals in Kigali.
I would also add that it is rather curious isn't it how closely the Bush administration moniters the situation in Darfur?
Bill will carry Rwanda to his grave as Janet will carry Waco to her grave.
Not my words but theirs.
