"tour de force" by Laughton and well acted by all involved
10:15 pm How Green Was My Valley (1941) this depiction of the hard life of Welsh coal mining families stars Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara and Donald Crisp. early work by child star Roddy McDowall. two of the more interesting characters in the story are Rhys Williams as the Boxer Dai Bando and Barry Fitzgerald as his "trainer" Cyfartha. excellent drama worth watching for the acting. is somewhat a "tour de force" for McDowell as the young Huw Morgan
Friday July 4th 8:00 pm Sergeant York (1941) story of the life of WWI hero Alvin York from eastern Tennessee stars Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan with Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Ward Bond and Noah Beery, Jr. Best Actor Oscar for Cooper and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Walter Brennan

3:00 pm Guys And Dolls (1955) not usually as Broadway musical fan BUT Frank Loesser's music with Damon Runyon's New York mob characters has oodles of great tunes. stars Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra with Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye. I think most gamblers will enjoy it.
8:00 pm Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1966) 10:30 pm The Taming of the Shrew (1967) two excellent Elizabeth Taylor and Richard movies, one serious drama the other light comedy. they are both worth watching for Taylor & Burton fans

Robinson'sLittle Caesar (1930) and James Cagney's The Public Enemy (1931) that launched the "Gangster" genre in Hollywood.

Saturday July 19th
2:45 pm Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951) with Gregory Peck in the title roll. I read all the C. S. Forester Hornblower novels when I was a kid so naturally this movie is a personal favorite. it is a great British naval adventure in the age of Lord Nelson well acted by all involved.
Sunday July 20th
3:00 am Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) movie about the planning and execution of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942. stars Spencer Tracy as LtCol James "Jimmy" Doolittle with Van Johnson and Robert Mitchum as two of the "Tokyo Raider" pilots. obviously a very inspirational patriotic film at that time. the raid didn't do much damage to the Japanese BUT their over-reaction in trying to attack and invade Midway Island in June of 1942 and their defeat in that battle changed the tide of the War in the Pacific.
Tuesday July 22nd
8:30 pm McLintock! (1963) comedy western with John Wayne as cattle baron and all around "wild man" "G.W." McLintock and Maureen O'Hara as his long suffering wife Katie. fun movie with plenty of laughs and something different from the usual John Wayne western

2:30 am The Long Gray Line (1955) somewhat fictionalized of the life of long time Irish immigrant enlisted man Marty Maher who spent 50 years in service at the Military Academy at West Point. stars Tyrone Power as Maher and Maureen O'Hara as his wife Mary O'Donnell with Donald Crisp as "Himself", Martin's father and Ward Bond as Captain Koehler the USMA "Master of the Sword" (athletic director). has Peter Graves in an early roll as Corporal Rudy Heinz who is somewhat of rival of Maher's. was well acted by all involved and a very patriotic "recruiting poster" for West Point

.....Gallipoli drove Churchil to drink....obvious reasons.
He made up for that call.
recently watched The World Wars mini-series on The History Channel about how WWI and the period between the wars effected Hitler, Stalin, FDR and Churchill as WWII leaders. everyone thought Churchill was dead in British politics after the Gallipoli disaster
think it is BRILLIANT for TCM to show the 1932 Paul MuniScarface immediately followed by the 1983 Al Pacino version.
wish they had done that with the 1930 All Quiet On The Western Front followed by the 1979 Richard Thomas as Paul Baumer, Ernest Borgnine as "Kat" Katczinsky and Ian Holm as Himmelstoss version which in some ways is better and even more terrifying than the original. Holm greatly expands the part of Himmelstoss when he finally arrives at the front and how he is transformed from the stiff martinet into a pretty good soldatin

Saturday July 26th Julius Caesar (1953) excellent film adaptation of the Shakespeare play with Marlon Brando as Mark Antony, James Mason as Brutus, John Gielgud as Cassius, Louis Calhern as Julius Caesar and Edmond O'Brien as Casca. Brando, who was notorious as "The Mumbler" in other works, actually enunciates quite clearly as Anthony. good introduction to Shakespeare. plays @ 3:00 am
Metropolis (1927) Fritz Lang's silent epic science-fiction classic is STILL one of the all time great movies of that genre. the FX is outstanding esp the scene where the robot or "maschinenmensch" is transformed into a double of the heroine Maria. the old German silent actors like Alfred Abel as Industrialist Joh Fredersen, Gustav Frohlich as his son Freder, Brigitte Helm as Maria. Rudolf Klein-Rogge as Rotwang, the scientist and inventor of the robot, Heinrich George as Grot the foreman and Theodor Loos as Josaphat the fired executive really knew how to act for effect before the age of sound. well worth watching to see what REAL SciFi with an actuasl plot is about compared to some of the recent tripe playing. plays @ 5:00 pm
The Mummy (1932) classic horror staring Boris Karloff as the re-animated Egyptian priest Imhotep infatuated with Zita Johann who he believes to be the reincarnation of his lover the Princess Ankh-es-en-Amon. one of the three great horror movies of the early 1930's along with Karloff's Frankenstein and Bela Lugosi's Dracula. plays @ 9:45 pm
Sunday July 27th Rebel Without a Cause (1955) the James Dean classic with Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Nick Adams and Dennis Hopper. one of the three movies along with East of Eden (1955) and Giant (1956) that made Dean a Hollywood film legend. plays @ 1:00 pm
Monday July 28th with the recent passing to James Garner, TCM is playing 12 of his movies in a row starting with Toward The Unknown (1956) @ 3:00 am and ending with Marlowe (1969) @ 1:30 am Tuesday July 28th. #5 is a personal favorite The Wheeler Dealers (1963) with Garner as Texas oil man ("wheeler dealer") Henry Tyroon, Lee Remick as his love interest stockbroker Molly Thatcher, Jim Backus as Molly's sexist boss. Phil Harris, Chill Wills and Charles Watts as Henry's three Texan partners Ray Jay, Jay Ray and J.R. with Louis Nye as Stanislas the "art wrangler" and John Astin as SEC regulator Vanson who is trying to nail Tyroon for stock fraud. a VERY funny "screwball" comedy and definately worth recording. plays @ 11:15 am
