John Grisham's The Pelican Brief (1993). watched on HD Net Movies last night. I really don't think you can go wrong with a Grisham novel made into a movie. The Firm, A Time to Kill and The Rainmaker ALL excellent. this suspense thrill has an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Sam Shepard and John Lithgow. definate worth watching/recording if it's on a movie channel again OR getting from Netfix of three
I just can't pass up watching Waking Ned Devine (1998) when it's on a movie channel. GREAT Irish comedy with a lot of sight gags, one liners and an excellent Irish music soundtrack. it's quickly becomming an all-time favorite of mine of three

Anonymous (2011) political drama set in England's 16th Century Elizabethan Age. the premise of the movie is that the playwrite William Shakespeare was actually just a "front" for an English nobleman, Edward de Vere, who was writing plays like Henry V and Richard III as propaganda designed to foment political change..
pretty much an "unknown" cast ex for Vanessa Redgrave as the elderly Elizabeth I, BUT VERY well acted by all involved. Joely Richardson as the young Queen Elizabeth, who is the the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson, is "sehr heizz".
IF you like shows like The Tudors, you will enjoy this. it plays on the Encore Drama channel agian Tuesday March 12th @ 12:25 am & 6:00 pm and Wednesday march 13th @ 12:10 pm pacific time. of three

The Hunger Games. Meh. True to the book which is a kiddie, but enjoyable and quick read. IMO Stephen King did this better in the 70's and 80's with The Long Walk and The Running Man, but there are worse ways to burn two hours.
This is 40. I don't know why but wasn't expecting to like this one. I was always an Apatow fan, but for whatever reason I sat down looking to be disappointed and I was dead wrong. This movie took awhile to get rolling, but it really cracked me up at times, and underneath all the silliness, I really related to a lot of Paul Rudd was dealing with. Not saying it's an instant classic or anything like that, but it was a rare comedy that didn't have a good first hour just to completely fall apart as the story progressed.
The Corner. Not a movie, but an old miniseries on HBO from 2000. Creator of the Wire wrote it, starred a handful of Wire actors, and in a way was a sort of prelude to The Wire which came a couple years later. I was coming off a 2.5 month seven season Dexter marathon and kinda lost in what to watch next. I saw this on demand and said "let me watch a few minutes to see if it has that Wire magic." 6 hours later and I burned through all 6 non stop. Amazing. About a family from Baltimore all dealing with drugs in different ways. If you are a Wire fan and you haven't seen this, watch it immediately!

My girlfriend bought that last Twilight movie yesterday. I guess it was alright but i thought the CG in some parts of the movie could've been better. Like when Bela tackled that mountain lion it looked like she was tackling Garfield in a tale of two kitties...

Limitless---pretty decent flick with Bradley Cooper.
Drive---really good flick with Ryan Gosling. I really liked this one.
Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind---super bizarre movie with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It was really weird and I don't think I enjoyed it all that much. But don't regret watching it since I was bored as hell.
The Cider House Rules---Decent movie with Toby Macguire (Spelling?) Pretty dramatic.
Drive was by far the best out of the above mentioned. Ryan Gosling is a really actor IMO

watched Men in Black 3, aka MIB-3 (2012) on STARZ movie channel Saturday. I think it's the BEST of the series mostly because of it's "back to the future" style plot and the Apollo 11 tie in (I'm a NASA freek). VERY "nasty hot" toots in the opening. the alien villian "Boris" is the MOST interesting of the three movies.
Will Smith as Agent J, Tommy Lee Jones as "old" Agent K and Josh Brolin as "young" Agent K are all excellent in their rolls BUT Michael Stuhlbarg as Griffin, the alien that can summon up the past AND future, STEALS the show. very moving scene near the end where Agent K, who though his father abandoned him when he was a young boy, finds out he was really a heroic Army Colonel who helped he and young Agent K save the world in the past.BUT dies in the process.
GREAT use of 50's and 60's music throughout the movie esp the exit track with is the Mickey & Sylvia 1956 song "Love Is Strange" with the addition of a Rap and Techno mix. overall a typical fast moving FUN MIB. it's on STARZ all month. of three
revisited the 1970 Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam western Little Big Man on Turner Classic Movies. GREAT story well acted by all involved. Chief Dan George as "Old Lode Skins" was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. I was absolutely in LOVE with Aime Eccles as "Sunshine". well worth recording OR getting on Netflix IF you have never seen it. it's also of three
and btw, Jason Statham's Safe (2012) is playing on EPIX channels again this next week. excellent fast paced non-stop action movie which I think is one of Statham's BEST. definate of three

Le Femme Nikita (1990) pretty good French "spy-action" movie happened to be on TCM last night. kind of a "choppy" plot and Anne Parillaud as Nikita is a skinny skank BUT Jean Reno's relatively small part as Victor "The Cleaner" near the end lead to him later staring as Leon in The Professional in 1994 and I think the movie is worth watching just for his scenes.

Mr Rink, what did u think of US remake of La Femme Nikita, "the Assassin, one of the rare instances where a remake is as good as the original, gabriel Byrne at his smoothest in this and Harvey keitel had a great cameo as the Cleaner.
Loved the Professional too but more for the performance of Gary Oldman as a mad and horribly corrupt government official.
as we're here I saw "Water for Elephants", a fantastic period drama of a depression era circus troupe, excellent performances from Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, reminded me a lot of the HBO series Carnevale.

haven't seen it

for my money, Jean Reno as Leon, a pre-teen Natalie Portman,in her feature film debut, as Mathilda and Gary Oldman as Stansfield could have ALL been nominated for Oscars.
watched Infamous (2006) last night on the new "Ovations" channel. it's the story of Truman Capote writing of "In Cold Blood" with Toby Jones as Capote and Daniel Craig as the murderer Perry Smith. I thought the whole movie, and esp Jones portrayal of Capote, was better than the Philip Seymour Hoffman movie "Capote", which was released a year earlier, for which he won a Best Actor Oscar.

I watched half of The Boxer with Daniel Day Lewis and Emily Watson.
It was a good flick. Daniel Day Lewis's character takes a bum wrap and tries to fix his life and community with boxing. Good drama. You won't be disappointed.
