Movies you saw in June

Man of Steel - Not a superman fan by any means but this movie was well done. I would recommend watching this

said about the same thing in my review back in April. thought Henry Cavill was a good Superman as were Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Michael Shannon (the psyco prohibition agent turned gangster Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire) as General Zod. pretty much non-stop action with excellent CGI. is a fast paced action-adventure 

one of my top five all time favorite "screwball" comedies One, Two, Three (1961) was on the MGM movie channel last night. stars James Cagney (in his last full movie roll) as the Berlin  Coca-Cola Company executive "Mac" MacNamara, Arlene Francis as Mac's long suffering wife Phyllis, Horst Buchholz as East German commie Otto Ludwig Piffl, and Pamela Tiffin as "southern bell" Scarlett Hazeltine daughter of a top Atlanta Coke exec who gets knocked up by Piffl. great supporting cast of the luscious Liselotte Pulver as Mac's secretary Fraulein Ingeborg (who he is fooling around with), Hanns Lothar as Mac's abused German admin asst Schlemmer and the three Russian trade delegates played by Leon Askin, Ralf Wolter and Peter Capell. has a VERY funny bit part by Red Buttons as a US Army MP Sergeant

along with Bringing Up Baby (1938), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), What Did You Do In the War, Daddy? (1966) and What's Up Doc? (1972) it is one of the FUNNIEST and most fast paced comedies of all times. it is one laugh line or gag after another throughout the movie. IF you have never seen it it is worth viewing and hopefully will be on MGM, TCM or some other movie channel in the near future. definate

I ran across One Hour Photo flipping through with the remote and was shocked how good it was.  I was expecting another dumb movie from Williams but this is worth a watch.  It was interesting seeing Williams play this kind of role.

agree somewhat with South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut about the singing although I thought "Uncle Fukka", "Blame Canada", "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" and Cartman's "Kyle's Mom's a B!tch" were pretty funny. I paged thru most of the others.

Cartman's frustration when he gets the anti-cussing chip implanted and he gets zapped everytime he swears is pretty funny as is when he uses the chip to throw lightning on Saddam Hussein near the end by reeling off a string of obscenities. single funniest (and I wish would happen in real life) is the bit where the General shoots Bill Gates in the head for replacing the Army's  Windows 95 computer operating system with Windows 98

Cleaner (2007) murder-mystery "which cops are crooked and which are straight?" movie staring Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris, Eva Mendes and Luis Guzman. Rotten Tomatoes threw rocks with a 17% rating BUT I thought it was pretty well acted and an interesting mystery. plays on Sony movie channel again Friday June 27th @ 12:05 pm and Saturday June 28th @ 4:25 pm pacific time. rate it

Mimic (1997) SciFi-Horror I reviewed last month. very similar plot to the the Alien-Aliens movies only with lab grown "Judas Bugs" running amok in the NYC subway instead of "Xenomorphs" in space on a freighter and later at a space station. has very similar suspense and "startle" effects. plays again in HD on Showtime-Showcase Thursday June 23rd@ 2:00 am pacific time. worth recording IF you liked the Alien series. rate it

The Faculty (1998) another SciFi-Horror I reviewed back in Febuary. has elements of the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers and John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing. pretty fast paced with good action, suspense and "startle" scenes. plays again on the Cinemax "ActionMax" channel again Tuesday June 24th @ 6:40 am and Friday June 27th @ 5:00 pm pacific time. rate it

Christine (1983) the John Carpenter directed Horror-Suspense movie from the Stephen King novel about a "evil possessed" red-and-white 1958 Plymouth Fury and the effect it has on it's rather nerdy teenage owner and those around him. has become a "cult classic" with it's 1950's classic rock soundtrack. over the years the very name "Christine" has become synonymous with any automobile, aircraft or piece of machinery that is mechanically "wierd". has Robert Prosky in one of my personal favorite rolls of his as as Darnell the scrap yard owner. plays on Sony movie channel in HD Thursday June 27th @ 7:00 pm and 10:35 pm pacific time. it is rare for it to be broadcast in HD and it is a definate

Godzilla 2000 (1999) typical Japanese film company Toho Godzilla movie production with plastic models and wooden acting. this one with a UFO and the space monster "Orga" as Godzilla's enemy. people either like these movies or hate them. personally I get tired of watching an oversized T-Rex wreck Tokyo. plays again on Sony movie channel Monday June 30th @ 5:50 am IF you want to record. was pretty much for me

Syriana (2005) pretty good geo-political spy-action movie loosely adapted from retired CIA agent Robert Baer's memoir See No Evil. excellent cast with George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright, Christopher Plummer, Chris Cooper and William Hurt. Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Golden Globe for Clooney. has four storylines woven within the plot. gets a bit convoluted in spots but overall an entertaining movie. plays on HBO again Friday June 27th and Saturday June 28th. rate it

Maleficent, i enjoyed it!

Godfather.

Out of the furnace with Christian Bale. Enjoyed it very much. Anyone see 2 guns with Marky Mark and Denzel? Any good?

be interesting to know WHICH movies YOU think are better.  I am personally a Citizen Kane (1941), Casablanca (1942)  and All Quiet on the Western Front (BOTH the 1930 Lew Ayres - Louis Wolheim classic AND the 1979 Richard Thomas - Ernest Borgnine made for TV remake) fan

The Man with the Iron Fists (2012) decent asian martial arts "flying kung fu" action movie staring and directed by the rapper RZA with Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, the beautiful Jamie Chung and WWE wrestling star David Bautista along with a number of Chinese cinema stars. in addition to Lucy Liu and Jamie Chung, it has oodles of VERY tasty asian girls in the cast. was very much in the style of a Quentin Tarantino movie with non-stop action and plenty of "blood & guts".

NOT really a Chinese "kung phooey" movie fan BUT was better than I expected (ex for the "rap crap" soundtrack which was annoying). Russell Crowe's character is really pretty funny in spots and reminded me somewhat of Chris Waltz as Dr King Schultz in Django Unchained. plays on HBO-Signature again Friday June 27th @ 11:00 pm pacific time. rate it

Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Casino, Training Day and Shawshank are my top 5 movies of all time.

I liked 2 guns. Thought it might have been a little better overall but woth a watch atleast

actually I think THE best presentation of the two original Godfather movies is The Godfather Saga which Francis Ford Coppola recut for NBC as a TV miniseries  in chronological order back in 1977 with all of Young Vito from Godfather II first, the original Godfather second then al of Micheal as Godfather from II third. also had oodles of extra scenes esp from the Young Vito segmet that really "fills out" the story much like Coppola's 2001 Apocalypse Now Redux recut does that movie. the list of the added scenes is @ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Godfather_Saga with probably the most important to the story when Young Vito hunts down and kills the two Don Ciccio henchmen that tried to kill him as a boy before he goes to "pay back" the Don himself for the death of his mother and father

I keep hoping one of the movie channels will air it. AMC showed it in 2012 BUT they are overrun with commercials

I really liked the latest Batman trilogy, but I can't think of another comic book movie I'd watch more than once.

 

 

North Dallas Forty (1979) pretty good NFL Football themed "dark comedy" stars Nick Nolte, Mac Davis, G D Spradlin and Charles Durning with Bo Svenson and the late John Matuszak (who died WAY to young @ 38 years old). both Bo and "The Tuz" didn't have big parts BUT had some of the funniest lines esp Bo's "I love your legs" early on at the team party and Tuz's rant about football coachs and team management near the end. worth watching for fooball fans and is VERY funny in spots. plays on Encore channels Wednesday July 2nd @ 12:35 am & 3:20 pm, Thurday July 3rd @@ 11:: pm and Friday July 4th @ 6:00 pm. rate it

Watched 'What about Bob?" on Netflix..Seen it 20 times..Effin' love that movie..Bill Murray is kinda brilliant in it.

watched the first 30 minutes of Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013) before I just could NOT stand it any more and deleted. HAS to be the STUPIDEST "Comedy" EVER. plays on EPIX channels this week IF you want to waste your time. not even just plain

48 hours (1982) Nick Nolte, Eddie Murphy.  Probably one of my favorite movies of the 80s.  The chemistry between Nolte and Murphy is excellent.  And the bad guy played by James Remar is also good.  For the most part it is non stop action.  One of the best buddy buddy flicks in modern times.  One of the best scenes is Murphy going into the redneck country bar trying to get info on the bad guys. 

 

 

Another 48 hours (1990) Nick Nolte, Eddie Murphy.  This movie was the perfect example of making a sequel for money and not for the quality of the movie.  As good as the first 48 hours was this was the complete opposite.  I thought it was bad.  I didn't feel the same chemistry between Nolte and Murphy.  The bad guys didn't do much for me either.  It didn't have a great pace to it and seemed all over the place.  Just a clunker in my opinion which dishonored the first movie.  At least they stopped after this one.
