Movies you saw in May

Angel Heart (1987) psycho-mystery drama reviewed late last month. stars Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, and Lisa Bonet. one of Rourke's early best with some excellent "plot twists". worth recording and plays on EPIX channels again Sunday May 4th and Saturday May 10th. I rate it   

The Doors (1991) director Oliver Stone's history bio-drama about the band with emphasis on the life of its lead singer, Jim Morrison played by Val Kilmer. Meg Ryan plays his long time girlfriend Pamela Courson. outstanding acting by Kilmer who really catches Morrison's hedonistic life style and the movie is worth watching for Door fans just for the music. plays again on Encore channel again Monday May 5th @ 8:30 am and 11:30 pm pacific time. I rate it   

Mimic (1997) SciFi-horror drama which I thought was as suspensful as either of  the Alien-Aliens movies except instead of "Xenomorphs" running amok in space on a freighter and later a space station it is lab bred insectes that can "mimic" humans (hence the title) in the subways and underground of Manhattan island. has excellent "startle" scenes and I thought it was "edge of your seat" scary throughout. very similar "atmospherics" as the Alien movies with dark lighting and the "minics" insects jumping thru scenes were you just get a glimpse makes it VERY spooky. really suprised the two sequels Mimic 2 (2001) and Mimic 3: Sentinel (2003) went direct-to-video. would hope The Movie Channel would play those some time in the future I enjoyed this one that much

stars Mira Sorvino as Entomologist Dr Susan Tyler, Jeremy Northam as here colleague and husband, Dr Peter Mann with F. Murray Abraham as Entomology professor Dr Gates. Josh Brolin plays CDC officer Josh while Charles S. Dutton plays a NYC Transit Police Officer Leonard Norton. Giancarlo Giannini is the subway shoe-shiner Manny and Alexander Goodwin is his "special" (possibly autistic) son Chuy. two of the more interesting characters early on are the boys Ricky (James Costa) and Davis (Javon Barnwell) who sell wierd and different bugs they find to collectors including Dr Tyler. overall I think it is every bit as scary as the Alien series and worth recording for horror action fans. plays again on The Movie Channel (HD) Tuesday May 6th @ 6:30 am and 3:00 pm pacific time. I rate it   

The Wolf Of Wall Street - man what an awesome movie..leo did a fantastic job as always

Watched The Monuments Men,  it was a very average movie to say the least. 

check out this movie, BWS77. excellent "under the radar" horror-suspense. like I said, thought it was every bit as good as the first two Alien  movies

Finally watched 'Elysium'...I can't say no to sci-fi movies. I liked the style of the movie. But it turns into almost a super hero movie where the good guy and bad guy are wearing exo-skeletons fighting to the death.

It's one of those movies that could have been a  garbage-load better than it was.

will agree BUT "could have been better" seems to be the standard for most recent Sci-Fi's I have seen. at least was a better plot and action then the recent Tom Cruise offering Oblivion.

check out the movie Mimic (1997), Dutch. IF you are an Alien/Aliens fan I think you will be suprised

I'm like another Godzilla?  Previews look cool though.  Got to be better than the last one. 

That kid with the spoons creeped me out.

Alexander Goodwin as Chuy one of the things that made the movie SO spooky for me. thought he might even end up being the male that allowed the "Judas Bugs" to breed as he seemed to be communicating with then with those spoons

reviewed The Faculty (1998) back in Febuary and recommended it for SciFi horror fans. has elements of the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing.  early work by Elijah Wood as the geek high school paper photographer. Jon Stewart (yes, the comedy channel Jon Stewart), Piper Laurie, and VERY tasty Famke Janssen as teachers. has pretty much non-stop action, excellent suspense, a good number of "startle" scenes AND some tasty "T&A" near the end from a young Laura Harris who later played the "Grim Reaper" Daisy Adair in the cable series Dead Like Me

plays again on HBOZ channel Wednesday May 7th @ 5:25 am pacific time and and worth recording for those that like the genre. I rate it

I made it about half way thru before I jumped on the laptop and let the movie play in the background.

 

finally watched the 1925 silent epic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ which I recorded last month on Turner Classic Movies. stars 1920's matinee idols Ramon Novarro as Judah Ben-Hur and Francis X Bushman as the Roman Messala with Nigel De Brulier as Ben-Hur family retainer Simonides, the truely lovely May McAvoy as his daughter Esther and Frank Currier as Roman admiral Quintus Arrius. one of the early truely "epic" films out of Hollywood along with The Ten Commandments (1923). unbelievable scenes esp of the sea battle and chariot race long before the age of CGI. in many ways I think it is even better than the 1959 version with Charlton Heston. a GREAT example of early film making art. rate it

CBGB (2013) historical drama about the famous NYC music club which offered a venue for early underground and "punk" bands like The Talking Heads, Television, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, the Police, Iggy Pop, Blondie, The Ramones and others. stars Alan Rickman as owner Hilly Kristal with Ashley Greene as his daughter Lisa. found it interesting mostly because I am a fan of the music and also Rickman's rather "deadpan" portrayal of Kristal which was very funny at times. plays again on Starz channel Sunday May 11th. rate it

Krippendorf's Tribe (1998) family "screwball" comedy. didn't give it a lot of hope going in as the plot sounded kind of lame BUT it's Richard Dreyfuss as single parent Anthropologist Professor James Krippendorf so gave it a look. WAS pretty lame the first 15 minutes or so BUT picks up the "screwball" when Krippendorf starts covering his tracks after claiming to have found an unknown New Guinean tribe the "Shelmikedmu". after that it is one gag or laugh line after another and parts of it are almost as funny as the Dreyfuss favorite "Let It Ride". played last week in the Flix channel and hopefully will repeat soon. rate it

watched Sushi Girl (2012) on The Movie Channel. very WIERD crime drama about a diamond heist gone bad that looked like it was over cut as a LOT of the plot was talked about BUT never shown. Jennifer Lawrence look alike Cortney Palm is definately  as the nude Sushi Girl and Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill is pretty good as the gang member Crow while Tony Todd as the gang leader Duke is totally psyco wicked. look for Danny "Machete' Trejo in a bit part as a guard at the diamond merchant. overall looked like director Kern Saxton tried to make a Quentin Tarantino style movie and failed BUT does have a couple of interesting "plot twists" at the end". that and the lusciuos Cortney Palm gives it a from me.

The Road (2009) Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall.

I would have to say this is probably one of the most depressing films I have ever seen.  There were moments where I thought about turning it off but decided to stick it out to the end.  All of the basic necessities in life are just about gone in this movie.  I won't give too much away.  Viggo and his son basically spend the entire movie trying to survive while they try to make it to the coastline.  People are starving and any food source will do.  There are groups are cannibals and Viggo and his son have to try and avoid them while trying to find some source of food to survive on.  I would have to say that this was a better than average movie.  I just don't think I would want to watch it again.

LeRinkRat I think you should watch The Road.  I would be curious to see what you think of that movie.  I also watch A History of Violence the other night with Viggo and that's a good movie.

'The Road' is a good movie. I agree it's one of those good movies that I'll probably never watch again.

I saw it on DVD.  Not sure about the movie channels.
