Summertime is approaching and I thought I'd kick off the monthly thread for May
Whiplash
Indie film that has been playing on Encore and Starz (currently on-Demand through Encore as well) starring JK Simmons as a ruthless Jazz composer for an elite music school in NYC trying to get the best out of a Freshman drummer in his orchestra.
If anyone is in to Jazz music, I strongly recommend this movie. I am not a big Jazz fan, but this movie is really good regardless. It won 3 Academy Awards for a reason and JK Simmons does a superb job in this one.
3 out of 4 for me.

Trading Places (1983) VERY funny "Wall Street" themed comedy staring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Lee Curtis with Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche. English actor Denholm Elliott excellent as the butler Coleman. hilarious movie worth watching at least once esp for people interested in investment markets. the scene at the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) near the end of the movie an excellent overview of how trading "order flow" used to work back in the early 1980's. plays again on EPIX-Hits Tuesday May 3rd @ 10:00am & 5:00pm pacific time. I rate it of four
The Last American Hero (1973) interesting sports drama loosely based on the early life of American NASCAR driver Junior Johnson it stars Jeff Bridges as driver/"moonshine runner" Junior Jackson (based on Johnson), Gary Busey as his brother Wayne and Valerie Perrine as his "love interest" Marge with character actor Art Lund as their moonshiner father, Geraldine Fitzgerald as their mother and Ned Beatty as the local dirt track owner Hackel. The film's theme song, "I Got a Name", sung by the late Jim Croce, became a best-selling single. worth watching esp for NASCAR racing fans, it is interesting "early career work" by Bridges, Busey and Beatty. relatively short run time of 95 minutes. played on FX movies channel and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four

I have to agree with you on Trading Places Rink. I'm surprised that this is the first time you saw it as it's a 1980s Eddie Murphy classic comedy. Like Coming to America, it's a cult classic.
It's difficult to argue which one is better.

Oh hell, Slobbo, as a former investment broker back in the early 1980's, I saw Trading Places in theaterback then and probably a hundred times since. definitely one of my favorite comedies of all time
WAS first time I had ever seenThe Last American Hero, though, because I'm just NOT a NASCAR junkie. IS an entertaining movie with pretty good action worth watching at least onceeven for non-race fans

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) watched on a Dish-TV PPV. it's the first of a supposed three part "sequel" set after Return of the Jedi (1983). I thought it started out kind of slow BUT picked up when Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) show up about a third of the way in. has the typical Star Wars action with oodles of ordnance and light saber duels. the new heroine Daisy Ridley as Rey is way cute and a compelling character. worth a PPV for Star Wars and action movie fans BUT thought it could have been 20 to 30 minutes shorter and still told the tale. I rate it of four

Survival movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin that has been airing on the Encore/Starz channels. Their plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness and are forced to rely on each other for survival; all the while being stalked by a Kodiak bear.
This movie (1997-rated R) is very entertaining to say the least, and Hopkins and Baldwin both get two thumbs up for their acting. Hopkins performed his role while he had a slipped disc in his spine, which he attributed to his realistic performance.
3.25 out of 4 for me.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) directed by Guy Ritchie spy-action movie based on the 1964 TV series stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and the lovely Alicia Vikander with Hugh Grant as their British "handler". decent action, ordnance and "stuff that goes boom" BUT drags in spots. worth viewing for fans of the genre BUT I only rate it a of four. plays again on HBO channels Tuesday may 10th, Thursday the 12th, Friday the 13th, Sunday the 15th and Monday the 16th
Ant-Man (2015) Marvel Comics produced "superhero" action film stars Paul Rudd. Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly with Michael Pena in a supporting role BUT the real "stars" of the movie are the CGI "intelligent" ants. I'm not much of a Marvel characters fan and this started out VERY slow to where I almost dumped it BUT picks up the pace when Ant-Man shows up. from there on it is pretty much non-stop action and I really enjoyed it. I would say the MOST interesting of the Marvel movies I have seen and I rate it of four. sit thru the closing credits to see the "teaser" for the obvious sequel which looks like it will be either "Ant-Girl" or (the more politically correct) Ant-Woman". plays again on Starz channels Tuesday May 10th, Sunday the 15th and Monday the 16th

Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
3/4 dog bones
Not the biggest fan of Zombie movies but I figured it couldn't be too bad if Brad Pitt was in it. And surprisingly I thought it was a cool movie. Didn't have all this blood and gore but more of Oh no what are we going to do now to stop this zombie apocalypse.

World War Z (2013) I too am NOT big on "Zombie" themed movies either, doggs. I have it on the DVR but never bothered to watch. will have to check it out after your review
My Blue Heaven (1990) the Mafia themed comedy is a classic staring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. it is one laugh line or sight gag after another throughout. plays again on 5-Max channelSaturday May 14th @ 7:20am and Tuesday May 17th @ 8:00pm pacific time. I rate it of four
Bookies (2003) pretty good drama about three college students that start a sportsbook operation after being ripped off by the local Mafia bookie. pretty good plot and some humor it stars a cast of unknowns although Rachael Leigh Cook as one of boys love interest is way cute. runs a short 90 minutes and found it entertaining. has a crazy "plot twist" at the end. played on Starz channel and hopefully will re-peat soon. I rate it of four

Let It Ride (1989) along with Slap Shot (1977) probably THE funniest sports themed comedy EVER. stars Richard Dreyfuss as Trotter, David Johansen as his "lovable loser" buddy Looney, Terry Garr as his long suffering wife Pam and Jennifer Tilly as the "Holly Golightly" tart Vicki with former Momma's & Pappa's singerMichelle Phillips as Mrs Davis, Robbie Coltrane as ticket writer and John Roselius as the rent-a-cop Reardon. Richard Dimitri seals all his scenes as Tony Cheeseburger. the rest of the cast of characters at the race track could be found in ANY race or spoertbook in Las Vegas any given weekend. overall this movie is a HILARIOUS "screw ball" comedy that is a "must see" for ALL Covers degenrates at LEAST once. plays again on Starz Kids & Family again Monday May 16th @ 10:05pm pacific time. obviously I rate it of four as it is a movie i can watch again and again and it is STILL funny

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) yet another Marvel Comics superhero film based on the team the Avengers characters this time with James Spader as the voice of the evil villain Ultron and artificial intelligence bent on bring about human extinction. also introduces two new Avengers, who are initially villains in the movie, "the twins" twins Pietro, who has superhuman speed, and Wanda Maximoff, who can manipulate minds and project energy. Spader has a GREAT "menacing villain" voice as anyone who follows the TV series The Blacklist knows. as I have stated I am NOT crazy about Marvel Comics characters BUT it DOES have non-stop action, with lots of fights, ordnance and "stuff that goes boom" and the CGI is excellent. it is an entertaining move BUT is overly long at 2 hours 20 minutes. could have lost a few "filler" scenes and been much better. plays again on Starz Kids & Family Sunday May 15th, Monday the 16,th, Thursday the 19th and Friday the 20th. I rate it only because I did NOT think it was as interesting as the recently reviewed Marvel Comics Ant-Man (2015) and EVERY Avengers movie gets to be "same old, same old"

Jurassic World (2015) the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park series is more CGI "T-Rex running amok" although the new "villain" T-Rex is now a genetically modified dinosaur known as Indominus-Rex which is WAY bigger, smarter and more dangerous than a normal T-Rex esp because of it's abilities like a chameleon to "hide in plain sight" and also mask it's body heat signature. it is also some what more interesting than previous Jurassic films because the pack hunting Velociraptors have been trained by their "handler" as "hunting-attack" dogs and actually end up being "the good guys" at the end. overall was more entertaining than I thought it would be. I thought the attack of the flying Pterosaurs after an accident releases them from their aviary on the park visitors is way cool. plays again on HBO channels Sunday May 15th, Wednesday the 18th, Thursday the 19th and Saturday the 21st. I rate it of four

Drama baseball movie starring Keanu Reeves as a degenerate gambler in a 12k hole to two bookies. Set in Southside of Chicago, he attempts to pay down his debt by coaching an inner-city youth baseball team for his friend's investment banking firm.
I caught this movie on Netflix and it's worth a watch because anyone on this site can relate to the gambling. Some of it makes you cringe as he chases losing wagers.

Fury (2014) probably THE most realistic WWII movie since Saving Private Ryan (1998) it stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena, and Jon Bernthal as an American Sherman Tank crew fighting in Germany near the end of the war. very well done drama with excellent battle scenes. way different rolls for "LaPoof" from his usual "pretty boy" and Lerman from his usual "teen fantasy hero". plays again on Encore channel again Wednesday May 18th @ 6:55 pm and on Starz-Cinema Saturday May 21st @ 7:30am pacific time. as one of the more realistic war movies I have ever seen I rate it of four
A Fistful of Dollars (1964) the Sergio Leone "Spaghetti Western" ripoff of Akira Kurosawa's Samurai film Yojimbo (1961) just happened to be on after Fury last night. had NOT seen it in a long time SO sat thru it for maybe the hundredth time. it is the movie that really launched Clint Eastwood's career and made him a "bankable" Hollywood super-star. spun off the sequels For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). as a western themed classic that really changed that genre I rate it of four. hopefully will play again soon. definitely a "bucket list must see" movie at least once

Trainwreck (2015) this so called "romantic comedy" is well named because it iS a Trainwreck. sat thru it last night just to see what all the "hype" was about and it is even WORSE than The Intern (2015) or Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). your movie has to be a real STINKER to be a BAD as those two. plays again on HBO channels this week IF you want to fool with it BUT for me is strictly
the only thing that saved my night was that the classic Cold War thriller Fail Safe (1964) just happened to be on after i got done with Trainwreck. GREAT movie that scared the hell out of everyone back during that time in American history coming right after the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.
stars Henry Fonda as the President, Dan O'Herlihy as Air Force General "Blackie" Black and Frank Overton as SAC headquarters commander General Bogan. was a "tour de force" for Walter Matthau as the Henry Kissinger style civilian advisor "hawk" Professor Groeteschele. early film rolls for Larry Hagman as Buck the President's Russian translator, Fritz Weaver as General Bogan's aid Colonel Cascio, Dom DeLuise as Air Force Tech Sergeant Collins and Sorrell Booke as Congressman Raskob. looked like Jamie Farr, who later played Corporal Klinger in the M*A*S*H TV series, is the uncredited systems engineer on the bomber piloted by General Black that bombs New York at the end of the movie.
I think it is yet another "bucket list must see" movie at least once. plays every so often esp on "old movies" channels like Turner Classic Movies and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four

Mimic (1997) first reviewed back in January it is an interesting fast paced sci-fi horror movie VERY similar to the Alien/Aliens movie only instead of a "Xenomorph" running amok on a space freighter it is genetic engineered "Judas Bugs" designed to destroy cockroaches that had caused a plague and then die out instead reproducing in the subway and underground of Manhattan Island and killing people. had excellent suspense and "startle scenes" that rival ANY of the Alien franchise movies and had some crazy "twists" in the plot
stars Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam and Josh Brolin with Charles S. Dutton and F. Murray Abraham in supporting rolls. Alexander Goodwin who plays the young boy "Chuy" is WAY weird. plays again on Cinemax channels Thursday May 19th @ 6:45pm, Sunday the 22nd @ 10:30pm and Wednesday the 25th @ 12:00 noon pacific time. runs one hour 45 minutes and was pretty much non-stop suspense with excellent action esp at the end. Picked this one up off the swashbuckling sites. It's a pretty good suspense/thriller and makes a great date movie. John Goodman is excellent as always, and the tension is there for most of the movie. The ending got a bit weird, but very much worth a watch I'd rate it 7.5/10. I believe its coming to DVD/Bluray/everything else in a week or so.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) "James Bond" style spy-action thriller staring Colin Firth, Mark Strong, and Michael Caine. Samuel L. Jackson good as the wealthy megalomaniac villain bent on "thining out the human herd" to save the earth. young Taron Egerton excellent as "Eggsy" a new Kingsman recruit trained by Firth's character. plenty of fights, ordnance and "stuff that goes boom" and I thought it was entertaining. plays again on HBO-Signature channel Sunday May 22nd @ 8:45am & 8:30pm pacific time. I rate it of four. James Bond movie fans should enjoys it. Fantastic Four ( 2015) Marvel Comics superhero movie with a cast of "no names" was OK entertainment with decent action BUT was a Golden Raspberry magnet winning Worst Director, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel and tying with Fifty Shades of Grey for Worst Movie. I think that is a bit harsh as it was fairly fast paced action and only runs 100 minutes. was for sure better than the previous 2005 Fantastic Four with Jessica Alba which was absolute tripe. plays on various HBO channels all next week starting Sunday May 22nsd @ 3:45am & 6:45 am pacific time. I rate it of four
Jupiter Ascending (2015) sci-fi-action fantasy staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Sean Bean it stared rather slow but picked up the pace quickly and was pretty much non-stop action. has elements of JRR Tolkien's Ring cycle with "Gollum" style villians, VERY funny Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Vogon style bureaucrats and has lots of "Star Wars" style fights and battle scenes. Kunis NOT one of my favorites as she has gone WAY past being "cute" BUT was OK as "the princess" and Eddie Redmayne was ggod as the evil villian Balem Abrasax who is planing to "harvest" the Earth. critics threw rocks and it has a sorry 26% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes BUT I found it to be at least as entertaining as the recently viewed Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and the CGI is outstanding. plays again on HBO Tuesday May 24th, Thursday the 26th and Sunday the 29th.
