I thought I would get this started.  Everybody busy watching football in Sept.  It is scary movie month coming up.

just reviewed the Mark Wahlberg remake of the James Caan classic The Gambler (2014) in a separate thread, NOT nearly as good BUT worth recording for John Goodman's monologue about "getting to the  level of fukk you" near the end.

Wolves (2014) pretty good fast paced action drama with a werewolf theme. relatively unknown actors but Merritt Patterson as the heroine Angel could be a Canadian Megan Fox and Lucas Till is good as the hero fighting against other evil wolves. it's a short 90 minutes of pretty much non-stop action. the critics threw rocks BUT I found it entertaining and think it's worth a look. plays again on Showtime-Beyond Friday October 2nd @ 12:45am and Monday October 5th @ 9:05am & 5:00pm pacific time. I rate it of four

Red Planet (2000) Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, Tom Sizemore

Astronauts, and their robotic dog AMME, search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry.

imdb gave this movie a 5.6.  I would give it a 6.2.  I like the cast and thought the idea of the movie was good. And I have always liked Carrie-Anne Moss.  Not a heck of whole lot to the movie or action for that matter.  Just about a crew trying to verify that there is oxygen on Mars so the earthlings can start a new society on Mars.  Of course, nothing goes as planned and it becomes a survival of the fittest mission.  I have seen this movie a few times and for whatever reason I enjoy it.  But when the movie is over I always feel like they could have added a whole lot more stuff to the movie.

Thinner (1996) Joe Mantegna, Lucinda Jenney

A fat Lawyer finds himself growing "Thinner" when an old gypsy man places a hex on him. Now the lawyer must call upon his friends in organized crime to help him persuade the gypsy to lift the curse. Time is running out for the desperate lawyer as he draws closer to his own death, and grows ever thinner.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) excellent historical drama about TV journalist Edward R. Murrow and his CBS staff taking on that scum bag Senator Joseph McCarthy  and his phony Senate Subcommittee on Investigations back in the 1953. stars David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow and George Clooney as his "See It Now" producer Fred W. Friendly with Robert Downey, Jr. as CBS News writer Joseph Wershba, Frank Langella as CBS Chairman and CEO William Paley, Jeff Daniels as Sig Mickelson, Director of CBS News and Ray Wise as CBS News journalist Ray Wise

The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Clooney and Best Actor for David Strathairn. runs a short 90 minutes and is well worth watching for those interested in the history of the "red scare" era of the late 1940's-early 1950's in America or just well acted drama. plays on HBO channels again Wednesday October 7th @ 1:25am and Friday October 9th @ 2:05am & 5:05am. I rate it    of four

Jennifer's Body (2009) Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried

Nerdy, reserved bookworm Needy Lesnicki, and arrogant, conceited cheerleader Jennifer Check are best friends, though they share little in common. They share even less in common when Jennifer mysteriously gains an appetite for human blood after a disastrous fire at a local bar. As Needy's male classmates are steadily killed in gruesome attacks, the young girl must uncover the truth behind her friend's transformation and find a way to stop the bloodthirsty rampage before it reaches her own boyfriend Chip.

I guess somebody liked this and Megan Fox is hot but this wasn't my kind of movie.

Lucy (2014) EXCELLENT Sci-Fi action movie I reviewed a couple months ago. stars Scarlett Johansson as Lucy and Morgan Freeman with French actor Amr Waked as a drug agent and Korean actor Choi Min-sik as one of the better vilians I have seen in recent films. it runs a short 90 minutes and is just about non-stop action with excellent CGI, car chases and "oodles of ordnance". plays again on Cinemax channels Thursday October 8th and repeats Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I rate it    of four and just missed a four rating it is that entertaining. it is a movie I can watch multiple times and still find interesting

Pumpkinhead (1988) Lance Henriksen, Jeff East

A man conjures up a gigantic vengeance demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy the teenagers who accidentally killed his son.

2.5/4 dog bones.  Big fan of Lance.  Always liked to watch this movie around Halloween.  If Pumpkinhead shows up looking for you you better run like heck.

The Dead Zone (1983)  A school teacher Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken) a survivor of a road accident awakes from a five year coma to discover he has psychic abilities, when he gets visions of the past, present and the deadly future. And how he does it, is through the use of touch. But life has changed within that time with his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) being married; he's basically crippled and no longer having a job. So now he uses his abilities to help a sheriff (Tom Skerritt) solve a murder case, to save a child's life and predicting world's fate from an evilly corrupt politician (Martin Sheen) who plans to be president.


The Dead Zone directed by David Cronenberg  is the best screen adaption of a Steven King novel. Great performances as well especially from Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen.

I rate it    of four.

A New York cop investigates a series of brutal deaths that resemble animal attacks.

Great cast and a decent thriller.  Kind of a crazy story but the cast holds it up.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Released in 2013 as a prequel to the original Wizard of Oz, it was too cute and clever for it's own good until the last hour . Then it became a terrific remembrance of the movie which people my age remember as one of their childhood favorites. 

It's weird that I didn't even realize this movie existed until this weekend. I was thrilled to find it and was glad I spent the time to watch it.

One critic summed it up best, "It may not resonate with the Harry Potter generation, but should have their parents in awe."

 and a half.

Halloween III Season of the Witch (1982) Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin. Dan O'Herlihy

An apparent murder-suicide in a hospital emergency room leads to an investigation by the on-call doctor, which reveals a plot by an insane toymaker to kill as many people as possible during Halloween through an ancient Celtic ritual involving a stolen boulder from Stonehenge and Halloween masks.

2.5/4 dog bones

Alot of people didn't like this movie because of no Michael Myers.  But Dan O'Herlihy is great as the evil mask maker.

This is actually my favorite installment of the series. I thought I was the only one who liked it. 2 More days til Halloween, Halloween, Silver Shamrock!

I don't know why I like parts 4 and 5 so much more than I like the 1st one now, maybe it's the repeated viewings on AMC every October.   I'm kinda disappointed they aren't starting Fear Fest until after this weekend.   So many movies they could have on.....

Kolchak: The Night Stalker a GREAT horror-mystery series with Darren McGavin who is best known for playing the father in the movie A Christmas Story (1983). "it's a major award!!!"

Dracula Untold (2014)  action horror film with a different take on the Dracula legend with the true life Vlad Draculea aka "Vlad the Impaler" prince of Wallachia and Transylvania as the principle character using his "Vampire" powers to fight the Ottoman Turks invasion of his lands. excellent CGI and good battle scenes it is fast moving and entertaining. plays on Cinemax channels again Sunday October 25th @ 10:10am & 1:10pm, Wednesday October 28th @ 7:25 am & 10:25am and Saturday October 31st four times @ 7:15am, 10:15am, 7:00pm & 10:00pm. rate it    for the action and plot with a more interesting approach to Dracula story than the normal "suck your neck"

The Night Strangler (1973) Darren McGavin, Simon Oakland, Jo Ann Pflug

A reporter hunts down a 144-year old alchemist who is killing women for their blood.

2.5/4 dog bones.  Interesting story.  Has a few good scares.  Never made another movie but spun off a TV show.

Terminator Genisys Not terrible, not great either. Think James Cameron realized he went as far as he could with the premise after T2. Too bad no one else in Hollywood has drawn the same conclusion.

San Andreas Not like anyone goes into The Rock's movies expecting high art, but this was weak even by his standards. Implausible from start to finish, and no great sequences in between.

Edge Of Tomorrow Pretty sure I've seen it about a dozen times now. Gets a bad rap on account of Cruise, I suppose, but it's just a really entertaining film.

I agree with your Edge Of Tomorrow assessment. interesting plot with maybe a little TOO much "flash back" BUT overall a fast paced entertaining action movie. I gave it of four
