Fine introduction in memory of Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) the most popular companion in the history of Doctor Who.
I saw that and it didn't click. Tom Baker as The Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith definately two of the iconic Doctor Who players. Louise Jameson as "Leela of the Sevateem" (survey team) was always a personal favorite in the Tom Baker era. Sladen had reconstituted he role as an older Sarah Jane in three episodes of the new Doctor Who in the 2008 season.
Tom Baker is STILL my favorite Doctor although the "1st Four" of William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Baker were ALL excellent. it's a shame that BBC didn't preserve the Hartnell episodes
of the three "Modern Doctors" since BBC reconstituted the series, I think that the current Doctor, Matt Smith, and companion, Karen Gillan as Amy Pond are my favorites although Smith and Gillian's predecessors David Tennant and Freema Agyeman, as Martha Jones, were also excellent.
Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction series in the history of television running from 1963 thru 1989 and then from 2005 to the present.

I think many of Hartnell episodes were preserved because they were shown on the Space channel years ago. But the best missing episodes feature Daleks chasing the doctor thru time and space for a entire season! Unfortunately, most of Troughton episodes are missing.

I may be incorrect, thirdperson. might be the Troughton episodes. I know that when BBC started using video tape instead of kinescope, they recorded over a LOT of early tape.
sure wish BBC America could show the early serials which were on PBS in the States back way when. the "1st Four" Doctors are absolute classic
