PBS Frontline: League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis.
watched last night. was excellent investigative reporting about how the NFL for years denied how the collisions in football was causing brain injury to players just like the tobacco industry denied that smoking caused cancer.
first 20 minutes focused on the case of the great Pittsburgh Steelers center "Iron" Mike Webster who ended up a vegetable from the brain injuries he suffered in his 16 years of playing football for the Steelers and probably even previous to that playing college football @ Wisconsin. was the first big "public" case about the problem when he and his family sued the league. also covered more recent cases like Junior Seau.

Rat, I haven't seen it because I'm loaded up with handicapping and watching NCAA and Futbol. I love the game and played at a high level in high school. I'm from Tx. so it was a requirement if you have any athletic ability. Got my bell rung almost daily. Never seriously concussed but plenty of leg injuries that I gladly played with. Sounds like some of the show was about the accumulation of orthopedic injuries. Necks, backs, knees and the rest. Not a expert but do have some experiences.
Troy Aikman does a weekly show on my favorite sports radio station and this guy is smart and very honest about his opinions. When the discussion came to that show he went on and on telling about both sides of danger vs. reward and explained how the psyche of players works. Good stuff.
No way any child under 14 or better 15 yrs. should be allowed to play contact football. There are so many better ways like Futbol or flag football to develop skills. Youth football is child abuse. I sincerely believe it's not a sport for children.
I posted once when we were talking about "Requiem For A Heavyweight" the sad state of many great fighters. I fear the same fate for many of the new breed MMA fighters. I love the sport but fear dire consequences. GL. Doc

same thing in Ice Hockey now days, Doc. about 10 years ago when there started to be a rash of concussions in the NHL, Canadian hockey broadcaster Don Cherry on his "Coach's Corner" during Hockey Night in Canada showed the difference in "old style" equipment and the new "full body armor". guys didn't even were helmets back in the day and there were VERY few concussions because the shoulder and elbow pads were just a padded "brazier". NOW they are something a football linebacker would wear and are a WEAPON.
