Colour Me Kubrick: A True...ish Story
(Three out of Five Stars)
This “trueish” tale of a scam artist using the great film director’s name to get laid, free booze and cash is littered with biting sarcastic comments on cultures willingness to believe and do anything to try and achieve their 15 minutes of fame. Malkovich is pretty damn good as Alan Conway and is purposely outlandish, yet hilariously successful in his attempts to con his way through life using the combination of Stanley Kubrick’s talent and his known tendency to be a recluse for his own benefit. Those who have written reviews saying that it wasn’t believable because Malkovich doesn’t look like Kubrick make me laugh out loud! I hope that you are being sarcastic, because you are missing all of the satire if not. Nevertheless, this is not a perfect film. It is, indeed, a bit all over the place and not necessarily terrific cinema, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. What can I say? It made me laugh...
