OK… so the truth is that we’re all playing a part. We all want a director to tell us where to strand, a script to tell us what to say, and would love a note at the beginning of each day, telling us what will happen. And whether or not we choose to make it our own masterpiece is something controllable, unlike the uncontrollable certainty of death. Welcome to the existential premise of Synecdoche, New York. Kaufman delivers his best film to date with a philosophical blending of perfect taste. He utilizes the epicure ingredients of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener to concoct a delectable film that insists that you reconsider the sickness, paper-thin reality and overall fragility of the human condition. Mr. Kaufman is, in many ways, like a modern fiction novelist in the sense that he understands the power of creating a symbolic atmosphere. Synecdoche, New York is a refreshing look at our imminent demise and a unique blend of pure and honest reality and the metaphors which better explicate the complexities of said reality. This film does require a “close read” for lack of better terminology, so don’t go in lightly. However, rather than over intellectualize its ontological subject matter, it brings it to life with breathtaking artistry. A rare find and delectable treat. Watch closely and enjoy the harvest of inspiration!
