I think im in the minority by saying i was not impressed with the new Star Trek. I'll admit, I was never a fan of the Star Trek franchise, but i've talked to many people who also were never fans, who still enjoyed the movie.
If you like Action/CGI summer blockbusters, then you may enjoy the movie. But I do like those movies and still didnt like it. It felt forced and corny. Knowing Trekies, the producers surely felt pressure to not stray too far from the original series. I also got the feeling that the director/editor cut short cruial plot and character development for the sake of keeping it from dragging ass (in Abrams' defense, see Pearl Harbor for what happens if you dont keep your fringer on the edit button). And the result of these unfourtunes is forced lines from the TV show, plot predictability and seemingly random scenes that obviously had supporting scenes cut out. For example, when young Spock meets Old Spock; young spock is being chased by a snow monster, then I close my eyes for one second and he is sitting around a fire with Old Spock. I gave up at that point.
For me, this was one of those classic summer blockbusters that over-hyped and under-delivered.
