I heard Gary Oldman do an interview about this a few months back, sounded really interesting. This movie is prolly one of those limited release and only shown in artsy type movie theaters in smaller towns. That's another reason why it didn't make more. Critically acclaimed movies don't always make money. The Artist has grossed $12 million and the Decendants has only taken in $47 million, pretty low for a movie many feel will win best picture. Sherlock was made to get people to see it rather than for the art of it.

Scratch that... it's definitely in the top 5 of the last 10 years.
I cant believe everyone who will be nominiated before him. Woody Allen. Tate Taylor. Nicolas Winding Refn. Spielberg for fucking war horse probably the worst movie ever. Bennett Miller

No it went wide and only made 5.5million the first week.
I really hope Tomas Alfredson wins for best direction.
Probably one of the best 10 movies ive seen in the past 10 years.
you might want to check on that. It went limited release 12/11/11 and as of 1/8/12 it was released to more theaters, but I would hardly say 886 theaters is in mainstream theaters. Compare that to your Sherlock mention, that was released on 3,703 screens, that's a difference of 2,817 theaters. It's just like I was saying, it's more of an independent movie in artsy theaters. Comparing it to Sherlock is apples and oranges.

A must see for John LeCarre fans and espionage fans in general
I wish BBC America or PBS would bring back the original 1979 seven part BBC series with Alec Guinness as George Smiley. I understand it was OUTSTANDING.
I LOVE the genre and am sorry to hear it didn't do that well at the Box Office BUT hopefully that means it will be on the TV premium movie channels earlier.
Gary Oldman is definately one of the MOST under-rated actors in Hollywood. he SHOULD have at least been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as "Stansfield" in The Professional (aka Leon) in 1994. I rate that part as one of the top 20 villians of all time (although AFI doesn't even have him listed )

It was still showing in just a handful of the artsy type theaters when I saw it a week ago, so it isn't in wide release in my area.
Thought it was a little slow in spots, but was well done with great acting. I don't get the complaints from some reviews I saw of people who couldn't follow the plot. Wasn't that hard to follow.

Saw it today. Really enjoyed it. At certain points I had a difficult time understanding what was going on. Some points felt very convoluted. That's just me though. Still want to see it a couple more times to feel I got the whole of the movie. Gary Oldman was fantastic in it. As were the rest of the actors.

As a movie destination thing .....this one is for hard core spy/espionage fans only....well done sure...but maybe a tad overrated.... skip the theater .....wait for a rainy day and watch it at the house....
As mentioned..if expecting an action type thriller...you'll be bored to tears
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.
