It's just a trailer, but you can see some Donnie Brasco (which he wasn't nominated for, but still) magic in this role.

you should read the book first.  it has pretty good information on how fucked up law enforcement can be for those who aren't familiar with that.

I'm quite familiar with how fu**ed up law enforcement is although your point about reading the book is not lost.

WOW!!! looks like a GREAT telling of the Whitey Bulger story with an outstanding cast of Johnny Depp, Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton

i know you are, and it's been a while since i read it, but i recall it did a good job of talking about the things most people don't see, such as how the feds decide to prosecute and how they leave some people out and just go after others and the things that happen before the news get involved.

I've always meant to read Joe Pistone's book about the real Donnie Brasco. Have you read it? Never got around to it but I look at these agents who infiltrate the mob as incredibly brave, a mere bullet at any moment ending their existence (or likely, much worse). I wouldn't do it for any amount of money. What's the point? Mess up and you'll be headed for a wood chipper. Money won't mean much after that.

And these guys used to wear wires! Get frisked one time by your cronies and your life will be ended. The technology has come a long way from a tape recorder hidden in a cowboy boot.

no, i haven't red that one or really any mafia books.  i read black mass because i was interested in what they said about the fbi angle.

Nothing has really changed in Massachusetts. The mobsters now work at the State House. Mess with them and you'll pay a steep price.

for Depp fans check out the sci-fi Transcendence (2014) where he plays a dying scientist who's brain functions are uploaded into a computer that becomes sentient and the bio film Blow (2001) where he plays cocaine smuggler George Jung. both have been on various movie channels lately along with his more famous Donnie Brasco (1997) 

BTW, although the sci-fi movie with his kid After Earth (2013) (aka "After Birth") really STUNK, I think that Will Smith is still one of the better (and more "bankable" for a movie studio) action stars today. was excellent in Independence Day (1996), Enemy of the State (1998), I, Robot (2004), the bio film The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and the three Men in Black movies

Respectfully, it is exactly right. The state house in Massachusetts is as completely corrupt as the governments in New York, Rhode Island and Illinois. Massachusetts state government is nothing more than organized crime without the need for guns. Why take chances that those paid to enforce the laws will come after you, when you can own them for such a cheap price ? The arrests of 2 of the "Big Three" in NY ? Three straight speakers of the house indicted and convicted of federal crimes in Massachusetts ? For God's sake, how much more evidence does anyone need ?

as long as there is so much money in politics, this is how it's going to be.  since that isn't changing, this is how it's going to be.

gonna take a wild guess and say From Hell. interesting plot really well acted with an excellent supporting cast. watched again last night and it's a movie I can view multiple times

 it's a little strange, probably not for everyone, but i'd probably put it on my all time top 20 list.

go get it from netflix or however you see movies.
