At least the Grammys has the possibility of an egocentric Kanye West rant about how he is the greatest entertainer of all time.
Although I won't be watching it's always worth checking out the odds to look for some value. Sportsbook.com released odds for five of the awards so I thought I'd give my thoughts on who I think will win, who should win and some possible dark horses.
BEST ROCK ALBUM:
Coldplay (Viva La Vida) -200
Kid Rock (Rock N Roll Jesus) +700
Kings Of Leon (Only By The Night) +500
Metallica (Death Magnetic) +300
The Raconteurs (Consolers Of The Lonely) +1000
- Kid Rock, are you kidding me? How do you get nominated for Rock Album of the Year when your single is a bad rip off? The
other four nominees brought us solid albums but having Kid Rock nominated is just ridiculous. How about some recognition for
some lesser known bands that are coming out with good music like MGMT, Fleet Foxes or The Black Keys. I'm sure you guys could
pile more to the list as well. I just wish these awards shows would start to recognize bands who don't get the commercial success but are putting out better quality albums.
WILL WIN: COLDPLAY
SHOULD WIN: THE RACONTEURS
BEST RAP ALBUM:
Jay-Z (American Gangster) +700
Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III) -400
Lupe Fiasco (The Cool) +1500
Nas (Nas) +1500
TI (Paper Trail) +300
Pretty much what you would expect here. Jay-Z gets the nod by reputation alone in this one though. American Gangster was a
decent album but why not throw some love to Q-Tip for "The Renaissance" (Possibly the best Rap Album of 2008) or The Roots
for "Rising Down". Honourable mention to Ice Cube for "Raw Footage". Can't say I'm a huge Lil Wayne fan but this might be his
first album I would purchase.
WILL WIN: LIL WAYNE
SHOULD WIN: LIL WAYNE
DARK HORSE: NAS (Probably the best as far as lyrics are concerned)
RECORD OF THE YEAR:
Adele (Chasing Pavements) +600
Cold Play (Viva La Vida) +150
Leona Lewis (Bleeding Love) +125
M.I.A (Paper Planes) +400
R Plant & A Krauss (Please Read the Letter) +800
Ouch! Can't say that I'm a huge fan of any of these although "Paper Planes" is definitely one of those songs I can't get out of my head after hearing it on the radio.
WILL WIN: LEONA LEWIS (At least Greyhound will be happy)
SHOULD WIN: M.I.A.
SONG OF THE YEAR:
Adele (Chasing Pavements) +600
Coldplay (Viva La Vida) -250
Estelle (American Boy) +800
Jason Mraz (I am Yours) +800
Sara Bareilles (Love Song) +500
Once again, not an outstanding list but what can you do? I wouldn't even say that "Viva La Vida" was the best song off of Coldplay's album. I have to say that "American Boy" would be my pick.
WILL WIN: COLDPLAY
SHOULD WIN: ESTELLE
ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
Coldplay (Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends) -150
Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III) +175
Ne Yo (Year of Gentleman) +1200
R Plant & A Krauss (Raising Sand) +500
Radiohead (In Rainbows) +800
This is the category that gets interesting every year. Remember Herbie Hancock winning as a +1400 dog last year? This award
always seems to provide the best chance for an upset. There could be some good value in throwing down some cash on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The Recording Academy loves to give awards to Krauss and having Robert Plant with her certainly isn't going to hurt.
WILL WIN: LIL WAYNE (This guy was everywhere. I'm pretty sure that if I recorded a song he would have wanted a few bars)
SHOULD WIN: RADIOHEAD
DARK HORSE: ROBERT PLANT & ALISON KRAUSS
Who do you think takes home the awards? And if you have some albums that you recommend please feel free to list them.
Enjoy the show... if you have nothing better to do.
