This is in regards to any art form, most notably modern and and present-day; when you discover something new to you, and you can't quite put your finger on the reason as to why you're drawn to it, investigation and experimentation usually ensues. It happens a few times in life. The timeline for such an occurrence varies with each individual. I'll use mine as an example, with a smattering of links to many bands/artists which taught me to constantly KEEP SEARCHING. My timeline consists of: a) the pre-teen era (Michael Jackson, RUN DMC, UTFO), b) teen years ( Iron Maiden, DIO, Metallica),
c) college (Jeff Buckley, John Coltrane,Soundgarden), d) twenty something-or-other confusion (Mr. Bungle, ,Radiohead, Massive Attack), e) thirsty thirties (Clutch, Midlake, John Frusciante).
Almost forty and I've encountered many more bands/artists who inspire the awe, relate to me in spades, and assist in inventing who I am. For I am, in a huge part, what I listen to.
The next phase begins with these three, and I hope for my sake they're for real. (Death Grips, James Vincent Mcmorrow, Black Swan). If for nothing else, they're real for me.
