Funny...I read this thread and then about an hr later my little sister texts me and says "You'll probably like a band called xx"

Spin magazine and Pitchfork.com is a good way to stay on top of new bands.

Another way I like to discover music is go to youtube...While watching a band like xx's vidoes, start clicking on suggested videos on the right.

Last night I found a dude named Ty Segull. He's got a killer sloppy garage rock thing going on. The song 'Girlfriend' is pretty badass. The video is cool too.

(Somehow listening to xx and Ty Segull led me to the song 'Willie the pimp' by Frank Zappa. Where's that song been all my life?)

Listened to Real Estate and xx  liked Real Estate better.

Try Alabama Shakes  they are up for Grammy as best new band of the year. The song "Hold On" is great.

Man, you just made my day I went to Rhapsody typed in WIllie the Pimp and it was available, Rhapsody has never had Zappa albums available in the past and now there are 50+ . I will be listening to Frank Zappa for a long time as long as they are still avaiable. Awesome and thanks!

Here are two bands I have got into recently both are really good. They are not new bands by any means however, they are for me.  My Morning  Jacket has been around for quite a while. Cold War Kids are a local band from area where I live and I might be seeing them live soon.
