Just saw a post from Misfit inquiring about Jazz and I thought I'd start one about Smooth Jazz.

Few of my favorites:

Brian Culbertson - live shows are great.

Marcus Miller, FourPlay, Kirk Whalum, Jeff Golub...

Wyntons brother Branford is cool as hell but more upbeat and random.

Wayman Tisdale, ex Sac Kings and Phoenix Suns power Forward and nice guy. Had leg amputated from late diabetes and died last year (very sad) put out some amazing "smooth" Jazz.....

Great suggestions Atl.........

I love Marcus Miller.......he collaborated with David sanborn quite a bit.........

About ready to bust out a guitarist none of us mentioned.......with links and info.......arguably top 10 progressive guitarists/musicians...Just waiting to get the bite outta sitting up straight.

Lightweights by most jazz standards but I'll give a semi-shout out to Chuck Mangione & Kenny G for some mellow, easy listenin stuff -

Please don't take this the wrong way. I believe "smooth jazz" is some of the worst music released. Ever. 
Granted, these people can play and they've got the chops, but my goodness is it boring. Perhaps I'm prematurely giving an opinion which is based solely on a few songs I've heard growing up. If I'm not mistaken, "smooth jazz" used to be known as elevator music, right along with instrumentalized versions of pop songs called Muzak. 
On a side note, Earl Klugh used to be played on the stereo when my uncle would try and get in my pants when I was ten years old. Probably why I stay away, as well.

Kenny G? Really, Cashin?   Ooofa.
To each their own.

Maybe the live shows are worth more than the over-polished, watered-down album versions...
Is George Benson thought of as "smooth jazz?" If he is, well then, I'm a big fan. He is great.

maybe good therapy....
one of my favorite CD's is Benson / Klugh Collaboration...every song great

Benson not a "smooth jazz" guy....yeah that crap is OK but a little goes a LONG way

used to listen all the time...you boys threw out some good names....i like......Benson .....Acoustic Alchemy.....Kirk Whalum.....Joshua Redman....Jonathan Butler....The Rippingtons.....Lee Ritenour (check out Festival...and Color Rit for great Brazilian stuff)
