A song does not need to be complicated to be good. Here are a couple that come to mind:
Pigs On the Wing
Mother
Wish You were Here
These are not complicated songs, but I think you would agree they are great songs.

I would agree with you that a song doesn't NEED to be complicated to be great, but not the ones you chose. POTW is basically a lead in/lead out, & WYWH & Mother, while somehwat simple in content, are brilliantly produced. There is substance in the words & rhythm, & I love the changes in Mother, especially with the solo Gilmour does which accentuates the feeling of the song. Can't compare that to a song like "don't you stop" by the Cars. But I am biased to PF so.........
For the record, I do think "Since your gone" & "Drive" are very nice pieces of work by the Cars. I don't look for reasons to dislike a band/group...........I just know what I like, & I can usuually find something by most anyone that I like, even if I don't particularly care for the bulk of their stuff.
I agree with the point of the article.........& I know people who fit the description.

DHop..........don't know if I will go to see YES..........but I just bought tix (only $30) to Blue Oyster Cult at the Skagit Casino. Great little venue to see these guys..........even though I saw them 3 times in the 70's/80's.

So what exactly is your point? You started this thread with the premise that many people were "brainwashed" into thinking music played on the radio was good when it may not have been. Now you appear to be going in another direction, implying that bands had to bribe radio stations to get airtime, which is a slightly different issue.
It's no secret that record labels paid to promote some of their signee's to try to get ROI. Back in those days, radio tunes were generally 3 mins long..............& stations didn't like to tie up 6-8 mins on any one tune. Thus was born the "radio cut" version of a song. Maybe you're too young to remember, but there wasn't any classic rock stations back when classic rock was born..........just pop or country stations (rock stations were just starting to appear in the mid-late 70's). Bands that had longer than normal tunes (like PF) had to agree to butcher their songs to get air time. Well, you can only cut a song so much before it loses all integrity. Cutting an 7-8 min song down to 3-4 mins is just not feasible, & radio stations back then were slow to realize that, thus they just refused to play a lot of stuff.
That's one of the reasons I drifted away from radio.........I almost never got to hear some of the best rock being released because of the restrictions of the stations. All I anyone ever knew of "DSOTM" was "Money"..........nothing else off that album was ever played. That's just an example. The same could be said for a lot of other bands.
