Couldn't agree more. Were the influential? Yes. Did they help revolutionize music at the time? Yes. Are they a great rock band? I don't think so. I grew up listening to the Stones as they were my Dad's favourite band. I can say they are far better than the Beatles. People think I'm crazy when I say this, but I really do think they are sginificantly overrated.
I don't get how anyone can think Rush is overrated. If they were British they would be considered one of the top 15 bands of all time, unfortunately their Canadian and therefore don't get the respect they deserve. How many other bands with 3 members can sound like a 5 or 6 man band? Their talent is astounding and shouldn't go unnoticed. Oh yeah and they have arguably the greatest drummer of all time and easily a top 5 bassist ever. I don't get what's overrated about them.
U2 I'd have to agree with as overrated as well. Sure, there music is different, but different isn't always good, and to me, this is a case of not good.
The Who is so far from overrated it's not funny. Their lyrics were powerful, their sound was electrifying. I wish I could have seen them live, great singing, great drumming, great guitar and bass work, this band truly had it all.
Let's talk about underrated. I'd have to go with one of my personal favourites, Van Halen. If you don't have Eddie as one of your top 5 guitarists of all time, then you don't know guitar. The guy had the fastest right hand ever. People mistaken so many of his solos with finger tapping, but a lot of the times it's not. Alex is a very underrated drummer. The guy was solid, played some interesting beats, and was always on top of things. Obviously David Lee Roth era was the best. Me and my uncle talk about this all the time and we agree, greatest Van Halen album is Fair Warning. Yeah, their first album was awesome, and 1984 was pretty good too, but Fair Warning was so great, Eddie shredded that album to pieces. Songs like Mean Streat, Sinner's Swing, Unchained, So This Is Love, were great tunes, and this album just meshed together so well.
Alright I'll stop boring you guys, feedback is encouraged.
