before digging more in this hole, i am willing to stop. i dont need money. i wont lie, everyone wants money. but i gamble just to get the feeling of winning. otherwise thank God my salary is enough for my lifestyle (i dont spend much money in life i admit)
but when you lose 0-7 feeling of winning goes away.

Like any vice, you have to replace the activity with something else. I've chosen masturbation and shoplifting.
sounds healthy.
absolutley the right message. no idea about groups, but 1st i would stop coming onto this website. if you can stop watching or caring about sports for a while. dont talk or hang with other ppl who gamble in any form. take it a day at a time and dont get frusterated if you slip, just think about the big piccture and what you wanna accomplish. bol bud

Personally, I think GA would only work AFTER you lost something of extreme importance. You have to learn your lesson the hard way when it comes to this. I believe if you are a gambler and like the rush, the only way to stop is to experience a significant event due to your gambling such as family members leave you, Divorce, owe your booking BIG and in real danger, stuff like that. You won't stop just because you lost 3K and have to eat instant noodles for a while. If you can afford to lose 3K without having to live on the streets, you'll still gamble. But if you lost 3K and your girlfriend left you because of it, you will always remember it and not want to repeat it.

Yeah man, They work but you have to get honest with yourself and be opening minded and willing to do whatever it takes to recover. Its a one day at a time process and alot of work involved. Its based around getting out of self and helping others. Gambling addiction is centered all around selfishness and self centeredness. You gotta find a power greater then yourself or it wont work and you will fail! Give it a chance and go to 90 meetings in 90 days. What else you got to lose? Sounds like you are already losing your sanity. All the best man!

I don't know how many times I told myself I was done with gambling. I went to GA once and only once. Maybe if I had continued to go, I would have saved thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars. I really didn't like my first experience. It was just a bunch of old guys who had been meeting for years and were sharing their stories. I just felt weird being there and out of place. There was no talk about the addiction itself and what it's about, why we gamble, trying to understand the addiction and how to beat it. I am a smoker and they say that stopping smoking is the hardest addiction to stop. Stopping to gamble is much more harder. Sportsbetting is especially difficult because of the relationship gamblers have with sports. To stop sportsbetting, you have to stop watching sports and having interest in sports. There are people who can just enjoy a game for what it is without betting on it. I know I can't do that. I associate sports with betting. Automatic. And that's the problem. And then there's chasing your losses. That's the story of every gambler there ever was. To stop gambling, you have to accept your losses and forget your past. Turn the page, leave it all behind you and move on. But we have ego so the ego doesn't let us accept our losses and keeps us in this cycle of continuous self destruction. So who likes the raptors tomorrow?

Not everyone has to hit that kind of a bottom... This is not all true but for some it does take hitting a really low place.

Agree, not everyone...but the majority. Especially if you gamble for the squeeze and not the juice...which most of are here for. If you don't hit rock bottom then technically you are affording your losses right? It is then just a really expensive hobby. Without hitting rock bottom you are "getting away" with losing even if it provides some hardship.
Similar to driving drunk...
speeding....
playing with matches...
You usually continue on with the stupidity if you've never had to face a real penalty or hard lesson.

I've started my blog/personal forum in January 2014, it's been 2 years now, I haven't stopped yet.
It's hard ... for me I'm mainly attached to the NBA ... NFL or Baseball doesn't talk to me ... Tennis does interest me from time to time but we got the Australian Open and I barely had any interest in that ... the reason being is because the odds in the NBA are quite rewarding and unlike Baseball or NFL the over/under has much more flexibility...
BUT
In terms of gambling, of the addiction itself - honestly I'd like to be more productive on my own and stop with it ... gambling takes precious time away from you ... time from your family, from yourself and much more. Is it worth it? No, I don't think so.
But can I tell you it's easy to stop? No, I'm still looking at odds ... right now I feel terrible that I could take SAS -13.5 at the end of the 3rd quarter noticing that "vicky98" took them for -18 at halftime:
Vicky is a great capper here, so noticing it I feel bad I could smash the -13.5 spread with like $5,000 on it (odds of 1.90 approx)
So it's killing me on the one hand but on the other I have to learn to live with it ... in the end of the day even if you make millions in gambling - it won't do you any good - people who won the lotteries and jackpots - most of them anyway had worse life than the ones they had before.

I'd say 50% could probably qualify as habitual/compulsive gamblers.
It takes tons of time away from work and family. I lost a big six figure amount 10 years ago with Pinnacle Sports. Told them i was quitting and going to hit a few GA meetings and they closed my account. I tried to open it back up 6-12 months later and they said sorry. So if you really want to quit that would be a good idea. At least it makes it a bit more work having to find a new book is etc, if you decide to go back out. I believe, for the problem gambler, it's Grace from God, if you are able to quit. In my opinion it's more addictive than heroin. GL

I'm spinning so bad right now after 2-3 bad beats tonight that I'm somewhere in between taking out the 23-24K in my account and quitting and putting it all on Boston tomorrow night at -3.
Is that normal? Lol

GA may work if you attend 3-4 meetings per week and more importantly, get a sponsor you can call in moments of crisis. Ga never worked for me. Dont like the set ups or structure of the meetings. Youre precluded from interrupting someones story. I would prefer a real discussion. Otherwise GA has alot of entertainment value with all the sob stories. If you thought you were a loser, believe me, some of the gamblers in GA are total hopeless fkg losers!

Dr. John got real liquored up tonight (since a mandatory leave of absence from the university I was tenured at, this has become a regular occurrence and works as a fairly adequate substitute in place of the meds).
Anyway, I, too, have placed a sizable (comprising double digits of his bankroll; it has been diminished by ~75% since the aforementioned leave, with money management principals out with the bathwater) wager on the Celtics -3. Adjusting for Noah's absence, Dr. John's numbers like Boston by 4 points. Bearing in mind the real potential of the Bulls not showing up (due to the situational angle we discussed in another thread), there seems to be significant value in the line.

As an addendum, Dr. John wagered six figures on a game back in '83 and lost. After which, I embarked upon a 10+ year gambling hiatus. A month long break from all things sports related really about solved things. Along with the inclusion of a new hobby or two.
Point being, it certainly is doable. Granted, I maintain the good lord certainly allowed it to be so, however, waiting passively for "the grace of god" to deliver you, as opposed to a more painstaking proactive approach is not the solution.
If you're truly at wit's end, pack up your belongings and take a month long vacation in a foreign country where you know no one. A drastic change of scenery can work wonders.
