I still say the NBA is fishy

I said it before the NBA Finals started and I still believe it to this day, that the NBA has some shady stuff going on in that league.
 
Now I do NOT feel the NBA Finals was fixed at all.....but I do believe at crunch time the NBA refs officiate the game based on the names on the back of the jerseys and some teams do receive favorable calls that does end up deciding games......and YES, LA and Kobe benefits from that more than any other team in my opinion at a rate of 2 to 1 in favor of LA.
 
I will continue to follow Donaghy, because I do feel that he is telling the truth.....and post only FYI threads as they become apparent.
 
I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that 2002 Sacramento vs. La western conference championship series....I Knew it had Shady with a capital "S" written all over it.  I told my friends about it then and they dismissed it as me being a "hater".....just like people dismiss the Kobe elbow on Nelson or other stuff that happening today or this year.
 
The missed calls -- non-calls at end of games is catching my eye now.....and people will still try to chalk that up as hating.
 
I'm not trying to promote Donaghy's book or anything, I just pasted the link to inform everyone that the NBA's worst PR nightmare has been released from prison.

By Contrat, the NFL does not give the call to a Peyton Manning....or Tom Brady...or Tomilinson...etc..etc....
 
but the refs have too much control over the NBA and can remove players from the game due to foul trouble..etc..etc..etc.that just doesn't happen in the NFL and MLB
 
NBA refs are the most flawed of the three major sports.

What about Milton Bradley? He says the umps are out to get him and that is why he is only hitting .220.

I agree the umps does their share of missed calls with balls and strikes  AND
 
NFl refs may call a hold on a kick off return, punt return, big play run or pass
 
BUT
 
the the things the NBA refs does too often decides the outcome of the game.

I agree, NBA refs do have way too much control and there were many calls, or non calls, during these playoffs that can only lead to this assumption.  However, I must say, I have not seen anything more shady than that SD/Pitt game last season.  No, I'm still not over it!!! I had Pitt and anyone else who did got robbed in front of millions.  How can you overturn a call and immediately after admit it was a mistake and the TD should have stood   And they had forever to review...I can only imagine what really was being discussed during that review.  And the $ swing for Vegas was enormous had that TD stood.  Anyone who believes otherwise is naive.  And it's bothersome that the NFL can just sweep it under the rug as if nothing happened.  I would have loved for them to investigate further.

Game 4. 4th Q. Orlando, 18 FTs.  Lakers. 0 FTs.
 
Yup, clear bias in favor of the Lakers.

This has been going on for years and years. NBA just decided to make Donaghy an escapegoat so the NBA and David Stern's image will not be tarnished. With that said, this year's playoff was especially evident. 2 of my most painful losses came what I felt was a ref's job.

#1 (had $5,000 on the under 193.5 in the Palozzo hotel @ Vegas)

Game 7 of one of the most watched series featuring Bulls vs Celtics. In the first half, the 2 teams combined to score 90 pts with the total set at 193 (vegas) and then, 47 free throws in the 2nd half.
Their FG% wasn't great but, how is any under supposed to survive with 47 FTs attempted?

#2 (had $4,500 on Dallas 2nd half spread of -2.5 @the Encore Hotel @ Vegas)
In the infamous game 3, Dallas was losing by 2 at the half so all they had to do was win the game for me to win so I went with it.
If some of you don't remember, there were 89 free throws attempted in this game. eight FREAKIN 9 FREE THRWOS!!! 
So, I was standing in front of the cashier window getting ready to get paid and there it was. Antoine Wright clearing fouling Carmelo Anthony, not once but twice. No call on the foul, Carmelo swishes a 3 and game ends with Dirk's flury from 25 feet.

Losses do hurt but I can deal with it if it came in a fair manner. But those 2 were especially hurtful. My theory is where do the NBA referees make their money? I strongly believe that referees are controlled by the bookies and to keep the sportsbooks in business. Which is why statements as such as "go against public and you'll make money in the long run" exists. But, unlike any sports, NBA referees have the power to exit a player without ejecting him from the game. 2 fouls in 1st qtr, 3 fouls in 2nd qtr and he's gone for the 1st half, pick up one more in 3rd qtr and he's probably gone for the game until maybe 6 or 5 minute mark left in the game.

I totally agree with you. Other may call this as "hate" but I say it is unfair. With the new bargaining agreement, NBA referres now earn $100,000.00 to $300,00.00 per year since 2007. Isn't it about time they stop hosing and greasing the game's outcome with their whistle?

well, because those superstar draw too much contact, while they receive some favor calls, ref often miss many correct calls , see how jones tripped kobe and got away with it, sometimes refs have to go benefit of the doubt

Game 2 of the finals was fixed in BIG WAY. It took Jack Nicholson to explode court side for the refs to tone it down. I had the Lakers ML that game and i couldnt believe what i was seeing. Thankfully they still won the game in overtime, but it should have never made it that far. It's pathetic to think a celebrity sitting court side made the refs aware everyone in the world thought they were idiots.

Lakers were better than the Orlando team that Van Gundy gambled and played in the Finals --- playing Nelson at point  is when Orlando is at their best --- but nelson was not at his best....so the Magic was not going to win that series with Nelson getting time and alston totally cracking up /breaking down as a result of Nelson coming back into the mix

As for the FTs....LA's strategy was to HACK howard...that cannot even be considered as a discrepancy

But finally, I do not think this series was rigged at all.....I do think LA (Kobe) benefitted from two or three late calls...but not enough to say the series was rigged.

I just think Donaghy may have more to say and that is why I created the thread...only as FYI for forum readers

Not true.  Howard had five of the 17 free throws.  So the other jump shooting Magic players got 12 FTs, while the Lakers got zilch.

If anything, it was rigged AGAINST the Lakers.  But it just didn't work.

In my opinion, this years NBA Finals was not rigged.
 
I did not record the games like I normally record all Super Bowls...but these games replayed on ESPN during the early morning hours as well as on NBA TV and I watched quite a few replayed games.
 
The way you can track bogus fouls (made up or erroneous foul calls) is when the TV crew plays the replay and everyone can clearly see there was little or no contact on the called foul......and then the icing on top of the cake that it was a bogus call is when the TV analyst proclaims to the TV viewing audience "FOLKS I AM SORRY BUT THAT WAS NOT A FOUL."
 
That did not happen too much in this series....it was said (in my opinion) in favor of LA as they (Kobe) tend to get the benefit of the doubt from the referees particularly late in ball games when the games are being decided.......
 
as for your FT stat analysis, LA. tended to HACK and make hard fouls if someone was about to get a layup from the 1st QTR til the 4th QTR ...Orlando did not HACK as hard or foul players going in for layups or dunk shots or foul as consistently as LA...which may be another reason why they lost the series.
 
Now, I do think the Cleveland - Orlando series was "fishy" in favor of Cleveland, but the refs could not help that Cavs team defeat a better shooting Orlando team.   It would have been totally obvious to everyone what they were doing if they continued to try to keep the Cavs in those games and extend that series.
 
But keep it real, I did not see many phatom or bogus foul calls that were called against LA...when they committed a foul...even the replay acknowledged that if a foul was called against a Laker player.......no matter how much they cried about it....even the TV analyst said......STOP CRYING, that was clearly a foul.
 
If refs really wanted to rig this thing against LA...both Kobe and Gasol would have been in foul trouble the way Howard and Turkulu got in foul trouble.......but I am not saying this series was rigged against Orlando or LA;
 
Van Gundy gambled (like us) with his lineup and he lost.....there is nothing "rigged" about that.
 
But make no mistake about it, the refs conduct is fishy......and I think Donaghy will enlighten us more and more about this stuff..................and he may even reveal who the true sweet-heart NBA teams are of the mob.......I think their #1 sweet-heart team starts with a "L" and ends with an "A"...........

I agree with you.  I do not think the Nuggets-Lakers series was rigged BUT......

some of the Nuggest key guys clearly was taken out of that series in the crucial games (not the elimination game -- Nuggets had clearly quit and did not compete in that game).......Billups and Nene were not allowed to compete due to early whistles in key games.......I remember hearing former Coach Larry Brown talk on one of the sports radio shows about how he hated to see "the look on the Denver Nuggets faces and even on their Caoch's face" and it is a look of the refs is doing a number on us....I think they even picked up a few techs in two or three games because they felt the calls were bogus....and yes even the TV analysts acknowledged on the replay that "sorry folks that was not a foul".

But the damaged has already been done......if a key player is relegated to the bench in the 1st half with three fouls then that hurts the team.....and then they can also not be as agressive in the 2nd half......the other team, in this case LA...keeps momemtum and can rest Kobe and remains confident.

It really doesn't take much for refs to impact a game......until they start placing Kobe, LBJ and all these other mega stars or even their sidekick....like Gasol .....in foul trouble or give them 3 fouls in the 1st half just like they consistently do for their opponents...and since they do not consistently place the "liked teams" in foul trouble then in my opinion the NBA or the referees or BOTH are doing some fishy and shady stuff with these games and it is not on the up-and-up.

Other sports...MLB and NFL do not take key players off the field...they continue to compete and may the best team/man win.....but in the NBA the refs calls can put Howard on the nech (vs Cavs) and Billups & Co. on the bench (vs LA) and it changes the game and the series.

I can't wait til Donaghy starts to speak up.

CT - Orlando held the Lakers to 20 points in the 4Q of G4. Kobe and Odom are quick enough to beat their man. Gasol and Bynum play an inside game. If Orlando didn't muscle up and play physical, they couldn't limit the Lakers to 20 points.
 
It's not like the Lakers are the only team to "hack" in the NBA. If anything everyone calls them "soft" and "finesse". This isn't Boston, Cleveland or Houstone we're talking about. 
 
So to get zero.  zip. nada. free throws in a quarter is troubling. Trust me, if the Lakers lost, every Laker would be screaming bloody murder about the refs. The problem was they won. 
 
G4 of the 09 NBA Finals made G6 of the 02 WCF look fairly called. In that game, it was 27-9 FT edge to the Lakers, but 8 were in the 2 minutes when the Kings were in hack-a-shaq mode.
 
Even Laker-hater Bill Simmons admits the Lakers got jobbed in G4. He said he couldn't really fault the Kobe elbow non-call in OT b/c the Magic got all the calls in the 4Q til the end of OT. This is Simmons, whose last article tries to undermine Kobe.
 
I agree the NBA seems fishy, but it tries to sabotage the Lakers as well. But honestly, it's probably hard to see that as a Laker hater. As a Laker fan, I try to rationalize that G6 of the WCF was fair, but in the end I can't.

siroz - your #2 example.  Melo had to make a prayer of a shot.  There's no way a ref would rig the game expecting Melo to drain that.
 
If he were rigging it, it'd never get to that point where Denver could win if they made that shot.

Howard was the defensive player of the year...but they fouled him out of about three games vs. Cleveland....but it did not help Cleveland...I do not think you are refuting that the Cav-Magic series was fishy
 
But, you appear to be in denial about LA.;  How many games did Kobe, who you must admit is very agressive on offense fighting for position and on defense (throwing elbows and moving his arms etc..etc..etc... they ALLOW him to play)......they do not call those fouls on him.....but when Howard dips just a little bit...and Gasol FLYS to the floor (classic flop) it is an offensive foul on Howard
 
The refs do things in subtle ways......usually it does not come down to calling Kobe for an elbow.......but "riddle me this Composite" if Howard threw that same elbow against Gasol, do you think he would have been called for it...............in my opinion the answer to that question is an emphatic Y.E.S.
 
I said a million times that the Finals series was not rigged but your boys (L.A.) benefit from bogus calls, questionable calls and non-calls more than any other team in the NBA
 
I just hope some of these refs other than just Donaghy comes forward and puts some meat and potatoes to this story so that it will not make me look like I am not being objective hear --- which I clearly am.

I understand your point, composite. The point I was making was how does a 2 clear fouls go by right in front of the referee in a game where 89 free throws are shot? Players from both sides were complaning because most of those fouls were touch fouls. Antoine Wright did everything take the jock strap off of Carmelo and all the Mavericks had stopped playing because they assumed the foul was coming. Instead, Carmelo get a wide open shot at a 3 pts. A wide open shot to a decent NBA player with any kind of perimeter game is 80+% money compared to "prayer of a shot" in your statement and Carmelo is an NBA All Star where he does pretty good damage from the outside. After the game, even the NBA came out and said "The officials in the Denver Nuggest vs Dallas Mavericks game today clearly missed 2 key fouls late in the contest" and issued an apology to the Mavericks. You're right, the refs did not make the shots for him but did give him a CLEAN LOOK at a basket with nobody even close to bother him. That's the point I was making.

CT - Take a step back. Orlando - 17 FTs.  Lakers - 0 FTs in the 4Q. 
 
If that happened the whole game, Orlando would have 68 FTs while the Lakers have.... 0 FTs.
 
Just how blatant of an example do you need?
 
Let me frame it differently, CT. If the Lakers got 17 FTs and Orlando got 0 you would be screaming bloody murder that the refs are trying to rig the game in favor of the Lakers.
 
I'm not disagreeing that NBA refs are the worst in all 3 sports. I also agree that the Lakers get the benefit.  A lot.  (G6 of the 02 WCF; non-call on Fisher's foul on Brent Barry in G4 of the 08 WCF).  (As an aside Kings missed 15 out of 30 FTs in G7 of the 02 WCF; yes, they should've won G6, but they only have themselves to blame for G7)
 
I'm just saying the Lakers also get screwed over at times.  17-0 FTs in blatant.  Watch the 04 NBA Finals carefully.  Every ticky-tack contact against Hamilton & Billups gets called while Tayshaun & Co. get to mug Kobe.  Lakers got no calls in G2 of the 08 Finals too.
