I’ve never seen so many guys getting hurt or claiming to be hurt, in their prime no less, in the playoffs. To make matters worse, they grimace and grab their body parts throughout the game.
Davis with the groin today and Luca with a pinched nerve, really? And that’s to say nothing of the load management these guys use as an excuse to sit out during the year (think about how many games these guys sat). I recall MCHale playing on a broken foot and Isiah Thomas playing on one leg and an aging Bird playing with a chronic bad back, where he had to lie on the floor during timeouts. I just don’t get it. But maybe these guys aren’t as soft as they appear to be, and they are badly hurt. And the game is actually a lot more physical today than it was when Bird, MCHale and Isiah played?!

A lot less physical. But as van gundy said on the broadcast, today's game is about speed and quickness not power.
You know if you've been on the basketball court these games are ripe for injury. You're extending pushing to the limit to get that extra fraction of a second. Trying to go as fast as you can. Running up and down the court.

I don’t think you understand what I’m saying. Nobody is saying injuries don’t happen, what I’m saying is guys used to play through injuries. Now they just sit, grimace and grab through the entire game, or hit the showers.

Understood good point. I agree the millenial age is softer
That said imo they are more reluctant to come back for a legit reason, because they're more likely now than ever to get reinjured. And getting paid more than ever. And the superteam concept-nobody wants to be the next durant pushing an achilles in a contract year.
We know a major injury is coming soon to a star player but we don't know who
As with football these guys get bigger stronger taller quicker groomed from a young age and their joints and tendons don't catch up

begginerboy,if i may interject..i think the point is more that you CANT carry on playing in the game nowadays with the speed it is played at,both on defense and offense as you are just going to be a liability and likely exacerbate injuries even more...now look,i dont dispute that perhaps players are in fact a little softer now,but the bigger picture is that they are CONDITIONED to be that way through the influence of trainers,medical/sports science staff and management..you get told you are not healthy enough to play enough times and you will believe it..and these days there is a huge element of prolonging a guys career as much as possible and "saving" him for certain periods/games on the part of the organisations..that shi.t never went on back in the day.so if youre asking is it the players or the environment then the answer might be a little from column A and quite a lot from column B....its funny that they make waaaaay more money than ever (and its all guaranteed) and on top of that theyre trying to extend the paydays out as long as possible.if guys from back in the earlier days knew what a pittance (relatively speaking of course) they got it would be THEM that would try and stretch out their playing days as much as possible to try and eke out every dollar.
seriously though, look at old tape of jordans era or birds era games and its almost unrecognisable in terms of player movement and ball movement and speed of foot, speed of dribbling..so i guess a guy like mchale at least could still somehow keep up by waddling from low post to low post on each possession and doing his work there.
and do we have actual numbers and statistics to back this up??i totally agree,it sure SEEMS LIKE waaaay more guys get hurt way more often than in the past...but perception and bias can be a bit.ch and can mislead us terribly at times.its just that almost every time a player goes down it does feel as if it is a big name guy, star player so perhaps that is why it is standing out as memorable/significant.

No doubt they are pampered. The business side is also a factor. But I don’t need stats or data to tell me what though sob’s the players who played 20 and 30 years ago were. I saw it with my own eyes. Those guys would laugh at what’s taking place now. Guys were getting clotheslined and body slammed back then, then getting right up to either fight back or shoot free throws:) The athletes today may be faster and quicker but they are also more physically and mentally fragile.

In some ways the today's game is more physical, BB. Today's players are a lot more athletic. A lot more explosive. And their bodies are different. Obviously basketball players were always tall but old school players were built thicker. They carried a lot more muscle. Today's players are long and then. There isn't much muscle mass protecting their ligaments and tendons. And to buds point, these kids are pushing themselves from a young age in ways that would have been unheard of 30 years ago. They aren't growing into their bodies. The average NBA player looks like a gangly teenager compared to some of the beefy players of years past.

Yes they’re softer. Today’s players are psychologically weaker. The culture has changed. It’s now accepted widely to sit out games and take yourself out of games if you’re not 100%. These dudes grimace, moan and limp more than your average porn star. It’s a sad state of affairs. Thoughts and prayers are send for sprained ankles.

yeah 2 sides to this coin, way more gangley one-and done 20 year-olds hitting the NBA now, as opposed to players in the 80s/90s beefing up a bit in 3 to 4 years of college ball; in 40 years of watching NBA, it has changed dramatically from the low-post dominant physical style of old to a legit track meet-it is a way more athletic game which lends itself to more injuries-that being said with the $ in the game now, it seems like fewer people player play hurt plus that soft millennial load-management stuff.....

I feel like it's a mixture. The generation is a lot mentally "softer" however it's a physical game.
I truly hate this load management crap, people pay their hard earned dollars to see you play/take time out of their night and to have someone not play is brutal.
-However to those who are even somewhat hurt, if it's something that is causing pain don't play. Players have learned for them to play longer to make more money don't play when hurt. So from their perspective I say take time off when hurt. But if it's like a bruise or something that won't cause long term damage i.e cp3

Thanks for all the input, fellas. It’s definitely a multifactorial deal, no one cause for all the “injuries.” There are many reasons for this, as you’ve pointed out. And now here we go again with Embid.

Players today are far more skilled, far faster and more athletic. The speed of the modern game is much much faster than it was 20-30 years ago and the game now demands so much more. It's also spaced more because players are more skilled than ever and defenders as a result are demanded to do more than ever. Big men for example have to actually move outside of the paint and be versatile and pick up on the perimeter unlike 25 years ago where big men barely had to move.
Injuries have always happened, it's just now we have the power of social media and the internet at our fingertips to tell is 75 different ways. Players are also smarter now and so are medical staffs and they won't let guys play through injuries that can negatively impact their long term outlook.

99% of injuries in the NBA are fake and scripted... Remember when D Rose was always injured for the Bulls but now he suddenly is never injured anymore... Klay was never injured but now LBJ joins the West and he is suddenly injured in back to back years... AD and LBJ were never injured this year... Embiid just randomly gets "injured" last night... Every year, star players suddenly get injured in the playoffs and the gullible sheep still fall for it over and over again... How the hell can you get injured running up and down the court and shooting a ball? It blows my mind that fans are too dumb to notice it is all BS just for drama and the storylines... I havemt gotten injured once playing basketball and i am in a lot worse shape than these athletes are, i dont mean that as in i am fat...

Yeah, human beings never get injured. I think your biggest issue us that you're such a beta man that you look at pro athletes like they are demigods. "They never miss shots so if they miss, it's scripted. They never get hurt so if there's an injury, it's scripted." If you knew anything about basketball, or being a man, at you looked at what D.Rose's game was prior to all the injuries and what it is now, you wouldn't be making the idiotic claims you make. Embiid is always injured. He sat out his first year and change. Was that a fake injury? Makes no sense for the storyline. Klay being injured makes no sense for the storyline either. And frankly, his first injury happened in real time for the world to see. Was that a faked real injury? Did he blow out his knee for the greater good of the story? The script? And frankly, as i've asked many times, if it's all scripted, then why do the storylines suck so bad?
