I have been waiting and watching the 4 teams in the most talented division in the NBA for a few weeks now, consistently watching full games on NBA league pass of the Mavs, Rockets, Griz and Spurs. I was also waiting to see which teams would make some moves at the deadline, I still think Mark Cuban may make another subtle move, but other than that, these 4 teams are set and their roster is final for the playoffs. I am officially ready to make my future bet on the division winner, it was a hard decision for me between the Griz, Rockets and Spurs, but I have decided on the Champs. Despite being a 3.5 games back of the division lead, I now think the Spurs have what it takes to repeat as divisional champions. They are just too deep, too smart, too experienced. I do worry a bit about the resting of players on the 2nd game of back to backs, but Pop and his coaching staff are so intelligent that I think they will navigate the rest and roster in such a manner, that it will still be difficult to beat them SU even when the grumpy old men rest. I love the champs and I will be backing them consistently from here on out.
Tonight the Spurs battle the Nugs in Denver. Spurs have been in Colorado for almost 30 hours and got a practice in on the Nugs home floor. The Nugs fly home after an embarrassing blowout loss to the best team in ball, yes they will have a chip on their shoulder, but it still will not be enough. They are out-matched at almost every position, especially the bench. Gee, Foye and Nelson matchup against Patty, Cory and Manu. Foye went 1-11 and looks very rusty since returning from a long layoff. Gee is a decent 6'6 forward defender, but Manu is too crafty for him. Jameer has been doing well in a Nugs uniform, but I think he will have a bad shooting night tonight, and playing alongside Lawson means they will matchup with Patty Mills and Joseph and I like that matchup for the Spurs. The 2nd unit big men for the Nugs are going to struggle tonight, Hickson will have to go against Baynes and they call him the Big Banger for a reason, he is a mammoth post defender and Hickson will not be able to get his against a solid big man defender like Aaron. Arthur will not be able to use his mobility to his advantage as tonight he actually faces a PF who can stay with him and disrupt him on the arc where he likes to lurk, Diaw will take the youngster back to school tonight, slow-mo-Bo may be old and slow, but wise and crafty. The Nugs starting front line will be outmatched, Timmy is much taller then The Manimal and should have no problem hooking his shots over him with relative ease. Nurkic, after an outstanding 10 game run, has seemed to hit the rookie wall early as most Euro rooks do at this time of the season, especially such young & immature ones like Nurk. Splitter will vet him up tonight. Chandler is just a consistent SF whom I have always loved and always wanted in a Raps uniform, but going against Kawhi is no easy task. Leonard is playing like a dog who has been caged for weeks, he wants to destroy and it shows on both ends of the floor. The starting backcourt for the Spurs however, will struggle vs the rested Afflalo and Lawson, Aaron had a huge game vs the Spurs last time out, but it was not enough as the Champs beat them by 8 without Tony or Patty and with Timmy going 5-14 and Danny going 2-7. The Spurs are 17-2 SU when scoring more than 100 points this season and boast a nice ATS record during that stretch when being favoured by less than 10 points. The Nugs have the 27th worst defense in the NBA allowing an average of 104.2 ppg. They are the worst in the NBA at committing fouls and sending their opposition to the line for freebies which will assist in the cover tonight. In each an every one of their home losses this season, they have only once prevented a team from scoring 105 points or more, ironically, that was the Spurs, but as I stated above, poor shooting nights from Green and Timmy along with the absence of Patty Mills and Tony Parker. I watched that game closely, a plethora of wide open 3 point shots were missed and easy buckets down low as well, the Spurs still managed to score 99 points while shooting a dismal percentage from 3 and the field. I just do not see how the Spurs lose this game straight up, not score 106 points or more or cover 3 possessions. Champs are primed and ready and have begun their ascent once again to the pinnacle of basketball supremacy.
