I remember when Drazen Petrovic had a great game about 20+ points playing for Croatia against the US Dream Team in 1992 at the Olympics, that featured all the greats like Jordan,Magic,Bird etc.

RIP petro, he was amazing

that was my favorite one    basketball wasnt even close to being the most important thing in these guys lives.  they were worrying about family and friends being killed and losing friends.  was a different time.

a woman, know for her psychic abilities was seeking him for 2 months before his death, to tell him that in the beginning of June 1993 there will be a terrible period for him, so she wanted to say to him to take care and not to travel in that period...

She didnt reach him, and he never got her message...if he did...who knows...?

he was suppossed to travel with the team on the plane but took a car with his girlfriend instead

and I should have posted yesterday

petro used to live in me nghhood,I can still remember him geting out of the cibonas dome late evening after staying alone for shoting practice.

watched his games in '85,'86 live,I was 16,17

thanks for the thread mad.

petro was the best!!!

he would have gotten the ring with nets if he only took the flight instead of a car ride

Watched that 30 for 30 and they had a pretty nice squad with Kucoc, Divac, Petro and Dino Raja...I could be missing some other NBA players.

this post inspired me to watch the 30 on 30... what a great film. Divac was a good guy... he still carries a heavy burden regarding the end of their friendship...very unfortunate how things turned out.

Unbelievable story, and I enjoyed the 30 for 30 series on the life of him. Thanks for posting a tribute, to a man that passed away long before his time. He possibly could have been the greatest European to ever hit the hardwood, with Dirk IMO the greatest.

Dirk came as a kid practically, and at that time the NBA was much more friendly to foreign players, just as it is now. Had the circumstances been different, Drazen would have been an All-star, there is no doubt in my mind. Arvydas Sabonis, Toni Kukoc, Vlade Divac, Dino Radja...they all had distinguished careers in Europe and in the NBA after that, but Drazen was better than them, and what's hard to describe, Drazen had a certain charisma about him, always smiling, a very modest guy in all his succes and fame, I never read one single bad thing written about him, he was loved by all. I remember one special occasion, it was in 1992, I think, there was an exhibition match before the Barcelona Olympics and I think it was a farewell game for some player who was retiring.The hall was packed to the very last seat, some 7 thousand people, they were standing in the aisles, everywhere, you couldn't fit a needle in there and every player of Croatian national team was greeted of course, but Drazen got a 10 minute standing ovation, it was unbelievable. Thousands of people were at his funeral and there is one example that shows how great he was - in 1993 the war in Croatia was raging and both Croats and Serbs couldn't stand the very thought of each other, to say the least. When Drazen died, Serbian national television, notorious for anti-Croatian propaganda, announced the news of his death with the words : "Last night a great athlete and a great man Drazen Petrovic was killed in an car accident." Enough said.

R.I.P. Drazen, you were one of a kind and there will never be anyone like you.
