And what is stopping you from telling him that it is just part of their culture and they enjoy it and white people tend to like different sports more? Seems to be the best PC answer

Afro americans are good in sport, where You have to use vertical jump, quickness etc. They have much better athletic dispositions then white men. You can not see them in NHL because they would not use their advantages there.

I really did not know what to say, so I took the Dad approach and asked him why he thinks there are so many.
Interestingly, he is 9 and this is the first time he has ever seen someone as being different because of their skin tone.  I am kind of proud of that fact.

Show him the move "White Men Can't Jump", just tell him that they can jump higher, or explain to him the social system that has developed to oppress the black man and many see it as their best means out to achieve the American dream besides rapping.

Tell him in the 30's the majority of professional basketball players were Jewish and the majority of boxers were Irish because there are always groups that are excluded from the social/economic world and so they must gravitate to those occupations where they sumit themselves to painful and gruelling conditions with a chance for success/advancement. America has always had a "niggger"
