Some initial thoughts from last night's slate:
1. LAL is the worst team in the west. I'd rather have UTAH, SAC and MIN's roster than them. They will continue to be a turnstile on defense all year and teams should regularly hit 105+ against them. They are ATROCIOUS. I cannot overstate this enough. The personnel is just terrible outside of Kobe. PHOENIX SHOT FIFTY PERCENT FROM THREE against them and these were all wide open looks.
2. The ol "road team quitting in the 4th quarter " was on full display in POR, CHA, IND, MIA, and DEN -- never forget that aspect of a fourth quarter collapse in capping. Some home courts are worth more than others.
3. CHA shouldn't have been that close with MIL last night. I was impressed with the quality of their homecourt crowd last night though. MIL is actually, from the top to bottom of their roster, not devoid of talent at all. They will be a team this year that I will be looking to back catching a lot of points, I think they end up with a number of underdog upsets this year when teams look past them.
4. I'm a tad surprised Minnesota played so well last night in Memphis. Thad Young will actually end up being a pretty good pick up for them, if nothing else he's a consistent scorer from the wing spot and its been a while since MIN has had a 20 PPG'ish scorer there the last few years. I'm surprised as well that Dieng only got twenty minutes and that Muhammad is actually getting on the court for MIN, he was a non-factor last year and if he could use his physicality better on the defensive end, might end up actually being an asset for MIN. Funny how spending a year sitting on the bench and not seeing the court can often cause a guy's attitude and work ethic to do a 180, isn't it?
5. If Marcus Morris can match his play from against the Lakers the rest of the year, PHX will not miss Channing Frye nearly as much as I thought they would.
6. CHI is the team to beat in the NBA in my mind. Great coaching, great defense, great leadership, great depth... hard to find an area of weakness for them. If anything, they still need a 2 guard who can create his own shot. I have always thought Afflalo would have been PERFECT for them but it was not meant to be.
I'm still looking at today's card but at this point, I'm leaning ORL +4, NYK +12.5, DAL -10.5, and LAC -11.5 -- hate laying big chalk but I'm seeing blowouts in Dallas and the Staples Center.
Will be popping in throughout the day to answer questions and then lock in my plays.
