Reasons why this was an awful trade by the Knicks...

1)The Collective Bargaining Agreement, i dont know exactly how this works but the reason why Melo wanted to sign an extention right away is because there is a lot of uncertainty on a lockout and/or how much the max amount of money contracts will be after this season..

2) Knicks (unnecessarily) gave up a lot!!! wayy too much.   We all know the players involved so i wont get into each player but the knicks gave up a lot when they probably didnt have to (see point 3) ... the nugs were desperate and a lot of people feel that the knicks bid against themselves..

3) Melo was always going to go to NY...  He would of went there when he was a free agent and the knicks wouldnt of had to trade away their players for him.. He wasnt going to sign an extension with NJ...

4) Melo is not the answer, as great as he is, is not a top 10 player in the league in my opinion and he the knicks gave up a lot and also gave him a max contract which is fine cause everyone gets max contracts these days but the point is that the knicks are tying up a lot of money on Melo when i dont even think him and Amare (another 20mil per year contract) will be able to coexist..

They both weak defenders and they really need the ball.  Lot of people are comparing Billups, Melo and Amare to the  LBJ, Wade, Bosh scenario but it is not the same at all..  Bosh, i think, really loves not being the number 1 guy, will Amare?   LBJ loves to pass the ball as you can see by his assist totals over his career and so does Wade but Melo isnt a very good distributor. Chauncey is their assist guy but as a starting PG, Billups has one of the lowest assist averages in the league..

5) Melo/Billups wont be able to put this team over the hump.. For all the money the NY put out, this team isnt even a top 4 team in the East...  The Magic, CEltics, Heat, and the Bulls(especially when Noah comes back) are much better than the knicks.. 

6) Knicks have no depth.. They gave up so much, they are now tied up into salary and they have no depth this year and it could be tough for them to get more depth in the following years.. LBJ, BOSH, Wade are all getting below 20 mil a year (i think 17?), Amare and Melo are both making over 20mil.. They better hope Chris Paul will accept cheap ass money to come when he is a free agent in a couple years..

The main reason why i think it was a bad move by NY is that they could of got him for much less (they bid against themselves) and 90% chance if they would of just waited he would of went there as a free agent..

I agree that the Knicks failed to use their leverage, but the truth is we don't know whether Dolan panicked or if Melo would've really pulled the trigger on a Nets deal if the Knicks couldn't get it done.

I agree 100%. Not only for the reasons you've stated, but also in 2 years Denver will be a much better team. To have made this good of a deal is a real credit to Denver. With the constraints and pressure Denver was dealing with, it was an outstanding job on their part to say the least.

Billups, Melo and Stat is nothing to sneeze at.  Their bench is pretty weak but they have decent role players.  Fields does enough things well.  Shawne Williams and Walker could knock down 3's.  Shelden Williams is a big body.  Turiaf defends.  Douglas defends.  I think they did a good job(coming from a Bulls fan)

Its hard to say that the Knicks could have gotten him for less or that they bid against themselves. You may very well be right, but we really have no way of knowing that.

In regards to the Knicks giving up way to much. I like Felton and Chandler, both are good players, but in the grand scheme of things, they really do not matter.

Only time to will tell if this was a good or bad trade for the Knicks, but one thing it did do is make them relevant now

melo was never going to be a free agent. He was determined to get the extension money ($65 million is a fortune & to lose that number with the bargaining agreement expiring is a big deal)

My guess is he told dolan he would sign the extension no matter what & if the knicks wanted him it was now or never.

So the offer got out of hand.

I think its good in the end. Because the Knicks have CHAUNCEY!!!

Dolan panicked.. No way melo was going to sign with the nets, he already said he wouldnt this week..

Im happy Denver got rid of chauncey, i picked up Lawson last week hoping they would trade Billups.. Now lawson will do really well assuming Denver trades Felton which everyone knows they are already trying to do..

99.999% that Chris Paul will be  Nick in 2012. At Melos Wedding Melo, CP and Amare all toasted to playing together in NY in 2012..multiple times and they did it right in front of Stan Kronke majority owner of the Nuggets. It's said Kronke was so pissed he busted melos balls by making him sweat things out this long, this trade was supposed to be made months ago but Kronke was lived about the toasting at Melos  wedding.

if by chance CP lands elsewhere then Deron Williams will leave Utah for NY. So when its all said and done this deal will be OK for the Nicks. No idea who will ever play enough defense to win in the playoffs and i don't see even those three stars being able to beat the C's and Miami for the next 2-3 years and the heat for longer than that.

lots of people keep assuming Melo will be a free agent this coming summer but I thought he clearly stated that if there is no deal done, he will sign that Denver's offer.  No other team will be able to match that $ 65 mil offer in free agency. 

As for whether this deal is a good deal or not, we will have to wait until the end of the season.  It does seems like NY gave up too much on paper but they weren't getting anywhere with the current team and they need to shake it up to have any chance to make a serious run in this year play off.  Say what you want but I think whenever you get a chance to do something for your fan base, you do it.  They wasted 2 years waiting for LBJ but he didn't come, now they have a chance to grab one good player that they can build the team around.  I honestly think they have a good chance to get deep into the play off now.

BTW, I'm not a fan of either Carmelo or NY.  GS's fan here.

This trade is about the American $$$$$$$$, Melo brings in the public, brings in TNT and ESPN games, The knicks is like the Yankees, they don't have to win to make lots of money, more money than Denver Nuggets ever going to make. Melo brings in more excitement to MSG. They'll not win a championship, but they'll be in the playoff every year, That's lot of $$$$$$ for the Knicks. Superstar doesn't win championship, but the ticket is hard to find on every game.

Missing out on that extension money + pressure from agents + no desire to play out the string in Denver. You have no way of truly telling what could've happened if the Knicks didn't make a deal and Melo had to decide on Thursday morning between Denver and NJ

yo u are so wrong! we didnt give up a lot chandler & guido are replaceable role players lol superstars are not replaceable. melo is the best scorer in the league. the best and i dare you to argue with me. on team usa with dwade, lebron, bosh, cp3 etc etc. 
all the iso players were run through melo! every single one he was the #1 scoring option. obviously his defense is nothing to go home about but all that can be tweaked. 
felton has been my boi before he joined the knicks but so is big shot billups!! plus his contracts up soon then they can get creative its not impossible they land cp3 or deron no matter what people are saying about the new cba

I agree 100%. In a perfect world knicks get melo as a free agent and keep the players. In the real world ZERO chance he is walking away from 65 million bucks. ZERO CHANCE and I do not blame him one bit.

You're Playing Checkers while their Playing CHESS!!! You have to be able to look at min 10 steps ahead! Everything you said is as if everything is for the right now! They just got rid of the rest of the BUMB ass contracts that they didn't need (CURRY for #1!!!) And the Knicks need a clean slate! These moves are all necessary to GROW! They will end up with D Williams next & role players to follow.. This is a 3year plan not an overnight plan, So end this idiotic thread now and move on to today's games!! Please...

Really? Who said Billups is part of their soon to Be Big 3? He's the New Sam Cassell to maintain the ship before the New General comes in to run the Show being D Williams! If Billups decides he'll take 2 million next year since the Nuggets got rid of that 14 million he was looking to get by staying then he will be the the solid backup for the next 2-3 maybe years other than that he's just a pawn being moved again...

he was never going to resign with Denver unless it was a sign and trade deal to a team he liked..

The bad part of the Nets deal for Denver was the 2 first round picks had those strings involved,if it was a 7th pick or better the Nets kept it,and if both years which could happen,they were both in the top 7,they both became sec.round picks,another reason they wouldnt have made the Nets trade.Also the story is Billups would of wanted a buy out of his contract instead of going to Nets.
My point being that I agree with you on the Knicks adding the last player was not needed,forget his name but I think it was the big guy thats been playing in Europe.As soon as the Knicks added him it was done,the Nets deal was just for show and to make the Knicks give up more.Neither player hide the fact they were not going to the Nets,Melo said it in so many words at the allstar game when they told him there was a trade done to them.
