I know, the Knicks are not a team to be messed with, in more ways than one. But sometimes, you have to back a loser to win. The Knicks have hit rock bottom, folks, or at least we think they have. They’ve gone deeper into doo-doo than anyone thought was possible. The organization has alienated their current players (Melo), their former players (Oakley)and even their fans(Spike Lee). And to top it off, they have lost three in a row at home and 7 out of the last 10 games. Even worse, there seems to be no relief in sight. In fact, if the Knicks lose to Denver tonight, they may not win another game before the all-star break. Lose to the Nuggets, and then you face the prospect of facing the Spurs on Sunday afternoon (a timeslot the Knicks hate), which means going 0-5 on your home stand and then traveling to OKC for the last game before the break.
Lucky for the Knicks, and just in the nick of time, the Nuggets come into NY banged up. They will likely be without two Knick killers in Faried and Gallinari as well as Mudiay. Additionally, this will be the Nuggets 7th game in 11 days where they went road/home/home/road/home/road/road. The Knicks, meanwhile, will be playing their 6th game in 11 days, with the last 5 games taking place in NY. This is also a revenge game for the Knicks who have lost to the Nuggets three straight times going back to last year.
If all that does not excite you and make you want to throw your hard-earned money into the Knicks dumpster fire, I don’t blame you. This team is a hot mess right now and no one can know for sure where their collective head is at. But besides everything I’ve mentioned, we have a few other things going for us, which is good because we will need them.
1) Winning is the only deodorant in a situation like this. Even if it is just for one night, the Knicks, by winning, can deflect some of the negative media coverage and put it back where it belongs: on President Trump
2) The Knicks played hard against the Clippers and really wanted to win, even though they came up short. If they play with the same intensity against the short-handed Nuggets, they should be in good shape.
3) Phil Jackson offered an olive branch by way of a Tweet that seemed to offer an apology of sorts. I don’t he or the organization want this situation to get worse. His Tweet also seemed to allude to the political mood of the country asking everyone to put away their differences and make peace. I am hoping he also delivered that message to the team in person, but that might be hoping too much.
4) -2 is a very short line so all we are asking the Knicks to do here is win the game
Of course, there is always the possibility that this team has already quit on its coach and the organization, if not the fans as well, which is why this is a small bet and not a medium one or a big one.
The Play: Knicks -2
